Kids’ Choice Restaurant Program is a two-year research study funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). The purpose of this study is to develop, implement, and evaluate an intervention with independent restaurants to introduce and market healthy child menus with the intention of improving children’s access to healthy foods when dining out. The study is being conducted in two phases, with the first phase dedicated to formative assessment and instrument development and the second phase (beginning early in 2015) focused on implementation and evaluation of the healthy child menu intervention. The project staff, including unpaid interns, will vary in size but will range between approximately 4-9 people.
The research assistant will assist with all aspects of development and implementation of project activities. This may include, but is not limited to, activities related to restaurant identification and recruitment, instrument and protocol development and implementation, child menu and marketing material development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the child menu intervention. Activities will include both office activities and field activities in the restaurant environment, evolving in focus as the project goes through different phases. The position will require a flexible schedule, including routine evening and weekend work during periods of field activities.
Field Research Activities – 60%
Assist with development of study instruments and protocols/procedures manuals. Follow study protocols and procedures to implement observations of the restaurant environment and customer/server behavior within this environment, and/or to conduct interviews with restaurant customers to understand the ordering process and interactions. May assist with preparations for and conduct focus groups with parents and children and processing of associated data. Assist with development of healthy child menus and food offerings appropriate to specific restaurants, as well as associated marketing materials. Implement and monitor study intervention introducing healthy child menus and marketing materials into the restaurant environment. Interact with restaurant staff and adult and child customers in a friendly and professional manner to conduct study activities.
Restaurant Recruitment – 20%
Identify and verify eligibility of restaurants for inclusion in the study using internet resources, phone calls, and in-person visits, following written procedures and training instructions to ensure accuracy. Assist with updates to procedures and forms as necessary. Complete forms, tracking, and other documentation accurately and efficiently. Assist with development of recruitment materials and procedures. Assist with recruitment interactions with restaurants and restaurant employees, including appropriate conduct of informed consent procedures.
Data Management – 10%
Assist with the development of project filing systems; ensures compliance with policies and procedures for data management activities. Perform tracking of project activities and data; data coding, entry, and verification using SPSS and/or other data management programs.
Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned 10%
Attend training and meetings as needed; maintain routine communication with Project Manager to ensure coordination and implementation of project activities are on target and within established deadlines.
Completion of sufficient lower division coursework to successfully perform the required duties of the position, OR equivalent of one year related experience.
• Previous work experience in a restaurant or food services environment
• Previous experience working in a public health research environment
• Nutrition/Dietetics, Public Health, and/or Marketing education/background
• Bilingual in both English & Spanish
