We are currently seeking a Research Assistant for the Silver Spring area.


Develops and implements fermentation and protein purification protocols and processes using E. coli expression systems under the direction of project scientists and general guidance of project principal investigator. Duties include shake flask experiments, small-medium scale fermentor studies, chromatographic protein separations, and scale-up work to define and optimize expression and purification conditions for the manufacture of target proteins.

Uses basic microbial culturing techniques, basic protein analytic methods and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays to monitor and analyze fermentation reactions.

Use basic protein analytic methods (SDS-PAGE, protein concentration assays, HPLC) to assay for protein stability and to verify vaccine formulations.

Collects and maintains detailed and accurate records of experiments using appropriate software and standard laboratory notebooks, inventories and logbooks.

Assists with the generation, compilation and evaluation of data for technical reports, including support for regulatory filings for new investigational vaccines and preparation of technical reports, summaries, and protocols.

Provides basic analysis and interpretation of generated data, and assists in the development of standard operating procedures for fermentation and protein purification.

Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures. Provides leadership in the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.

Operates fermentation and chromatography equipment, and provides quality control, trouble-shooting and maintenance of said equipment and supplies and reagents needed to maintain fermentation operations.

Maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations. Employee is required to attend safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer.

Performs light duties and other related duties as required and assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of standard microbiology/fermentation techniques and biochemical methods; demonstrated ability to follow general instructions; excellent communication and analytical skills. Skills in operating computerized laboratory instrumentation/work stations highly desired.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelors degree in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology or related field. Specialized training course in fermentation/bioreactor technology or chromatography desired.

Minimum Experience: 2 to 4 years of applicable laboratory experience

Physical Capabilities: Able to work in a team laboratory setting and perform daily benchwork. Work requires some standing and sitting for long periods of time; bending from a standing or sitting position; intricate work with hands; carrying of light or moderately heavy laboratory equipment; and walking. Work with hazardous chemicals and reagents using standard safety protocols.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: This position does not have routine training or supervisory duties although the incumbent may be asked to demonstrate a technique or procedure to others or oversee an individual while he/she is learning a technique. The incumbent will not delegate work to other members of the technical staff. Direct supervision will be provided to the candidate by an assigned senior technical or scientific member of the laboratory team.

Work Environment: Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Branch Laboratories, Enteric Diseases Department, Infectious Diseases Directorate, Naval Medical Research Center.

Must be able to work independently following a brief period of specific technical training.
