Job Descriptions:
ETS Research & Development has an opening for a Research Assistant in the Center for Global Assessment. The successful candidate will contribute to projects aimed at developing and evaluating innovative measures of K-12 reading comprehension as a part of the Institute of Education Sciences Reading for Understanding Assessment grant. The successful candidate will contribute to external and internal projects designed to test theoretical models of comprehension, design innovative measures of 21st Century reading comprehension, create and evaluate developmental models of reading and provide assistance in developing methods of reporting assessment results.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Management/Leadership
Assist manager of data and technology systems for large multi-year project to design innovative technology-based reading assessment for K-12 to adult learners and be trained to become capable of co-managing those data systems.
Coordinate discrete phases of research projects (e.g., scheduling, testing, data collection, coding, and/or analysis activities of support and field staff).
Recruit, contact, and select potential research sites and subjects. Schedule meetings with school personnel, research subjects, and outside groups.
Schedule services with other ETS departments, staff and vendors.
Assist in arranging meetings with clients, committees, and consultants, as well as seminars and workshops. Attend meetings, take notes, and maintain records.
Primary responsibilities will be to (1) maintain item banks, using database application developed for project to store, search, and extract project data as needed by project team; (2) assist in preparing the prototype assessments for programming for web delivery; (3) prepare data sets for statistical analyses; and (4) prepare data tables and graphics for presentations and reports.
Assist in developing and refining research instruments.
Administer research instruments such as assessments, surveys, observations, and interviews.
Instruct support staff on procedures for data collection, data entry and check work.
Organize and prepare data for entry; Clean and recode data from existing datasets; Perform basic coding of new data.
Perform basic data analyses; Compile simple results.
Communication
Conduct literature searches and prepare reference lists with brief summaries of articles, including logic models.
Conduct searches of current educational practices, policies, reforms, and competitors to inform development, grant and proposal writing, etc.
Prepare initial drafts of study results. Edit and proofread research reports, proposals, websites, and external communication.
Assist in developing presentations and present as part of a team.
Required Experience:
EDUCATION
A Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, library or information science, or a content area of focus with coursework in statistics or research methodology is necessary.
Coursework or experience in use of a programming language, syntax or scripts highly desirable.
Psychology measurement/statistics, education, literacy, or other research experience or coursework helpful.
EXPERIENCE
Six months of research-related experience is necessary.
Experience using EXCEL or spreadsheets, and statistical or database software.
Affinity for working with numerical data; strong quantitative, organizational and logical skills; and good problem solving skills.
Knowledge of introductory research methodology and statistics sufficient to analyze and interpret research study results.
Experience in using scholarly search engines, conducting literature searches, and writing research summaries or results.
