Role purpose :

Perform routine research activities in plant care, seed production and efficacy testing in support of plant science research as part of a high performance team; supervise research assistants and contract employees to conduct daily activities following established processes and protocols; assist data analysis and interpretation.

Accountabilities: :

- Work a regular Friday through Tuesday shift in support of weekend activities
- Serve as an in-house expert in plant biology in growth facility to support different crops
- Participate on project teams or work streams representing the functional group with direction and support from scientists
- Stay current on developments in greenhouse technology, design, test, and implement innovative ideas and concepts to optimize plant growth
- Collect plant performance observations and conduct preliminary data analysis to generate draft reports
- Monitor environmental conditions in rooms and scout plants for diseases and pests, record data such as observations and room locations in database according to company policies with outstanding attention to detail
- Actively participate in cooperative greenhouse staff tasks and initiatives
- Conduct all activities associated with plant care, seed production and phenotyping based on agreed upon protocols
- Apply pesticides as part of the greenhouse team effort

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Critical knowledge: :

- BS degree or equivalent in agronomy, horticulture or plant science related field or an associate degree with a minimum of 2 years of experience in plant biology
- Understanding of basic genetic inheritance and plant physiology
- Knowledge of greenhouse equipment and operations
- Ability to identify plant pests

Critical experience :

- Experience working with transgenic plants (i.e., experience working with regulated materials) is desirable
- Proficiency in use of standard Microsoft office software

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities :

- Demonstrated excellence as a team player
- Ability to work with a variety of crops
- Demonstrated ability and motivation to work in unsupervised situations
- Computer skills such as working with databases, environmental controls, and Microsoft Office
- Excellent record keeping skills and demonstrated attention to detail
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to perform all physical aspects required in greenhouse operations
- Commitment and adherence to specific stewardship rules regarding GM plant materials is essential.

Additional Information:

- All applicants must be eligible to work in the US
- Domestic and occasional international travel is required to field site experiments, occasionally for longer than 7 days
