The American Sociological Association is looking for a full-time Research Associate. Under the direction of the Research Director, the Research Associate will be part of a four member team that provides research to ASA members and the larger scientific community. This research includes longitudinal studies of sociology program graduates, surveys of college and university sociology departments, salary and job market studies, social network analyses of teaching and learning scholars, and PhD-mentor relationships.
The specific responsibilities of this member of the research team are creating and managing some department databases and online surveys; assisting in writing and editing research briefs, articles, and other publications; creating and managing content for research department web pages, blog, and social media accounts; designing and formatting PowerPoint presentations and other Research Department publications; and working with other staff members to analyze data (using Excel and SPSS).
Master’s degree in the social sciences, preferably Sociology;
interest in sociological research;
experience in developing and managing surveys online;
knowledge of SPSS
experience creating databases in Excel;
ability to edit web content using a content management system (e.g. Wordpress) (advanced web programming knowledge is not required);
experience using social media such as blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc.;
proficiency with MS Office in general and PowerPoint in particular;
good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills;
ability to work independently and with colleagues as part of a team; and
min. 2 years of research/work experience.
Preference will be given to applicants with non-profit association work experience. Candidates must be able to travel in August to staff the ASA Annual Meeting if requested.
The position is available immediately. Salary is commensurate with experience.
