This position is responsible for supporting of the activities of the Center for Health Statistics within the Institute for Public Health Informatics and Research (IPHIR) at the Duval County Health Department. The Center for Health Statistics is responsible for diseases surveillance, especially focused on chronic disease surveillance, in a large metropolitan area and surrounding rural areas ( >1,000,000). Center staff utilize vital statistics, hospitalization, emergency department, population, and survey data to monitor the disease burden and changes in sub-county rates. Staff participate on national and state funded grants.

This position will manage large databases used for disease surveillance including designing/debugging programs in SPSS, cleaning and coding data, performing data quality checks, and linking large datasets. This position will assist with the preparation of health report, grants, manuscripts and policy statements. A successful candidate will have experience with descriptive and inferential statistical methods and geospatial analysis. Writing proficiency is required including a command of public health and clinical terminology.

Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) or related field preferred.

The Institute for Public Health Informatics and Research was formed in September, 2001 as a collaborative endeavor of the Duval County Health Department and the University of Florida. The Institute is conceptualized as a community resource to coordinate and enhance community health research, evaluation and develop evidence-based policy. The Institute includes a Center for Health Statistics which is responsible for chronic disease epidemiology and surveillance activities including sub-county geospatial analysis.
