The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organizations. ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.
This position is not to exceed 2 years. This position may be extended up to a total of 4 years at the discretion of management without further competition.

The incumbent will be assigned to the regional food systems project, part of the Multifunctional Farms and Landscapes to Enhance Ecosystem Services CRIS, and located within the USDA-ARS Pasture Systems and Watershed Management Research Unit, University Park, PA. The incumbent will participate in team research on food systems of the northeastern United States, with specific responsibility for quantifying the capacity of the northeastern United States to produce and consume pasture-based products (beef and dairy). The incumbent will: (1) map the production, distribution and consumption of pasture-based products in the northeastern United States; and (2) link local and regional pasture-based food systems to water quality, nutrient cycling and carbon balance effects at the state and regional scales. This research is a component of ARS National Program 215, Pasture, Forage and Rangeland Systems.
This position requires a recent Ph.D in Ecology, Agronomy, Biology, Geography or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position which are:
A degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
Knowledge of spatial statistics and experience with geographic information systems are required.
Experience with simulation models and agroecology is desirable.
