DESCRIPTION OF ROLE: The research librarian fulfills requests primarily from ASQ members who seek quality-related information that is produced and available through ASQ and other organizations. This role also addresses research requests from ASQ member leaders and staff, ASQ member units and other customers. As part of the Knowledge Offerings work group, the librarian role also supports content management, awareness and distribution activities.
SKILLS: Familiarity with day-to-day administration of a research or special collections library. Expertise with online and print research techniques, including working with specialized databases, is required. Experience with library cataloging and content indexing principles and with content management or library management software highly desired. Familiarity with copyright and permissions issues. Familiarity with basic quality concepts and terminology. Demonstrated record of providing superior customer service skills. Exceptional written and verbal communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
EDUCATION: A bachelor’s degree in information sciences, journalism, English, communications, or related field is required. A Master’s degree in library or information sciences is preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Two years of experience in a research, special collections, or public library using electronic information storage and delivery technologies. Prior customer contact in an information service capacity is required. Experience with library management or content management in a quality-related sciences or business environment is desirable.
LIST OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Perform searches of both ASQ- and non-ASQ content to identify relevant information meeting customer research needs, including fee-based researching.
2.Respond to customer questions submitted to “Ask a Librarian” website feature, “Ask an Expert” program, and ASQ customer care, membership, and sales work groups.
3.Process permission requests to reuse ASQ-copyrighted content and assess fees and issue invoices according to guidelines.
4.Process customer orders for print and online articles.
5.Collect data on customer requests received and create monthly reports for internal use to support content development activities.
6.Prepare routine content bundles for distribution to organizational members or for online publication, based on research collected for customer requests.
7.Raise awareness of ASQ information services and contribute to the ongoing development of the online Knowledge Center as the primary vehicle for promoting content on quality and information services.
8.Manage subscriptions to non-ASQ publications and acquire new resources to build the internal library.
9.Assist in the development of intellectual property policies, procedures and improvement efforts.
10.Upload vendor-supplied abstracts and indexing for ASQ journal articles and audit content indexing to assess and improve online searchability.
11.Provide training on the use of information resources for internal staff and for member groups, both in person and virtually. Provide support to visiting member groups who seek access to content.
12.Performs strategic research to support ASQ content development and business growth.
1.Internal - Frequent contact with support work groups such as customer care and accounting, and work groups that supply and request intellectual property and information services
2.External - Regular contact with members, non-members, and other organizations regarding information services and programs
1.Planning and scheduling. Designs and recommends plans and schedules for the delivery of information services.
2.Budgeting and forecasting. Assists in the development of and adherence to research and information services budget.
3.Responsibility for establishing objectives, policies or standards. Develops and maintains procedures for intellectual property management and information service. Assists in the development of policies, objectives, and standards.
4.Impact of decisions. Makes decisions that could impact the perception of value of the Society’s intellectual property and customer service reputation.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Operates independently with supervision received from the Senior Manager, Knowledge Offerings and Knowledge Center Editor.
