The incumbent serves as a Research Microbiologist within an interdisciplinary agricultural systems research team at the Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit (FSCRU) in Corvallis , Oregon . The FSCRU team research addresses high priority problems affecting the productivity and profitability of agricultural systems in the Pacific Northwest region with a strong emphasis on assisting producers to meet societal needs and expectations for food security and energy production.

Plans and executes a research program that identifies microbial isolates, populations or products that improve crop and soil productivity;
Conducts foundational research to characterize underlying mechanisms, and apply that knowledge to develop approaches that utilize beneficial microbial populations or products to improve crop productivity.
Collaborates with the team members within the unit to integrate the results of this research within a larger agricultural ecosystems context.
Basic Requirements: Applicants must meet the following specialized experience OR education:
Microbiology (0403): Degree : microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR
Combination of Education/Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra or their equivalent plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Graduate Education must be in microbiology, or specific area of study such as bacteriology, virology, mycology, algology, protozoology, parasitology, immunology, serology, microbial genetics, or soil microbiology; or specific applied fields of microbiology such as clinical and public health microbiology, food tech-nology, production processes, industrial fermentation, pollution, etc. Graduate study in related fields such as experimental pathology, infectious diseases, epidemiology, biochemistry, animal or plant physiology, genetics, plant pathology, and insect disease control, may also be pertinent, provided it has direct application to microbiological work.
GS-12 - Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or one year of specialized experience (as defined) equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service. If qualifying on education, your education must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skill, and ability to do the work.
GS-13 - One year of specialized experience (as defined) equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service.
GS-14 - One year of specialized experience (as defined) equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal service.
Specialized Experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:
1. Knowledge of microbiology with expertise in molecular approaches to characterize microbial populations and microbial products.
2. Ability to identify microbial isolates or populations that improve soil productivity.
3. Skill in molecular procedures and techniques such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR); site-directed mutagenesis of microbial genomes; cloning of genome sequences that are used to characterize microbial populations and microbial products.
4. Ability to perform genetic sequence analyses to identify genetic mechanisms that regulate the production of microbial compound.
5. Ability to plan, conduct, and publish research in peer-reviewed scientific journals and make presentations at scientific meetings.

R esearch scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. *Final grade level may be determined by a peer review panel.
