The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organizations. ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.

This is a temporary appointment NTE 2 years (may be extended up to 4 years without further competition).
A Ph.D. is required
The incumbent will use transcription activator-like effector nuclease (TALEN) technologies for targeted gene knockout and directed mutagenesis in order to enhance the growth and yield capacity of crops, including response to global climate change and environmental stress conditions. Plants will be transformed using Agrobacterium and monitoring methods will include DNA sequencing and analysis of specific proteins by immunoblotting.
This position requires a Ph.D in biology, crop sciences, molecular biology, genetics, or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Strong working knowledge of current molecular biological techniques including nucleic acid manipulation and plant transformation is essential. The ability to carefully genotype plants by DNA sequencing and to phenotype plants by protein immunoblotting and/or metabolite profiling is desired.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
