Specific Job Description
This position is for a Director to lead the Space Science & Instrumentation (SS&I) directorate reporting to the Vice President Advanced Technology Center for Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company. The SS&I is a center of excellence pursuing fundamental space science research, development of prototype flight instruments and payloads and design and development o f high fidelity test beds that advance the technology readiness level prior to flight. The directorate consists of the Solar and Space Physics Laboratory and Instrumentation and Development programs. These organizations provide premier instruments for astrophysics, solar physics, space physics, planetary science and earth remote sensing and have developed and flown 178 space instruments over the last five decades. The laboratories in collaboration with other research groups around the world have produced significant new results about the sources of solar magnetism, coronal structure, sunspot activity, the Earth's atmosphere and ionosphere, and the dynamics of the space environment and the effects of space weather on the interplanetary environment.

Responsibilities include leading the development and implementation of the SS&I strategy, nurturing existing and cultivating new customers, overseeing the execution of research and engineering programs, and driving the development of new business in our core space science instrumentation market. The successful candidate will be expected to forge key partnerships with R&D customers and with other leaders and technologists at the ATC and throughout the corporation. The candidate will also be responsible for sustaining a diverse, engaged and highly qualified workforce of more than 120 employees at the Palo Alto site. Some domestic and international travel will be required.

Responsible for coordinating subordinate employee recruitment, selection and training, performance assessment, work assignments, salary, and recognition/disciplinary actions. Directs development of theories for understanding, characterizing and organizing natural phenomena into a systematic and meaningful pattern for the benefit of project advancement and emerging technologies. May oversee intellectual property evaluations and development of patent applications. May direct interdepartmental activities and research efforts.
