Support the development and implementation of surgical outcomes research at the Curtis Hand Center to contribute to advancing the health of our patients while impacting all aspects in our tripartite mission of education, research and clinical care. This position will become a vital part of the successful team at Curtis Hand Center, expanding upon the excellent clinical services and current research activities in surgical outcomes. Design and direct research studies in hand surgery: this will include using various research methods, writing successful proposals, obtaining external financial support for research (sponsored research) to insure long term sustainability of the research activity, closely coordinating and aligning the research activities with the clinical leaders of the Curtis Hand Center, and participate in the educational activities of the Hand Center. Activities may cross multiple sites, working by pulling on the surgical outcomes data from different locations and potentially different disciplines. This position must be facile in data management and analysis.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Create, start-up and continue to build a Surgical Outcomes Research Program at Curtis Hand Center that furthers the mission and reputation of MedStar’s patient surgical expertise and provides knowledge that can be used for the clinical quality improvement program.
2. Lead the design, administration and analyses of surgical clinical data and clinical outcomes. This may involve the development and maintenance of databases and/or leveraging existing databases and search engines to use electronic medical records for research.
3. Develop short (one year) and longer term (three and five year) plans that define goals (e.g. funded projects, papers, recognition), resources and deliverables needed to insure successful growth, sustainment and national recognition of the program and its work.
4. Collaborate with Surgical leadership from the Curtis National Hand Center, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and the MedStar Health Research Institute to produce cutting-edge surgical outcomes scientific advancements.
5. Manage the research study budgets, expenses and financial projections, in collaboration with the MHRI administrative director.
6. Write research proposals and develop corresponding budgets and justifications to meet the scientific aims defined in various study proposals.
7. Develop, evaluate and validate novel innovations, processes and systems aimed at identifying error, mitigating risk and improving safety.
8. Design, implement and present/publish investigator-initiated surgical outcomes research and/or training both as a Principal Investigator (PI) and as a mentor and/or senior collaborator to other investigators and residents/fellows.
9. Develop personal portfolio that establishes recognition of that work and results in presentations and speaking opportunities at national and international safety/quality meetings.
10. Mentor residents and fellows throughout the MedStar system resulting in a strong cadre of researchers that contribute to clinical care improvements. Gain recognition for academic work and become eligible for academic appointment with our university partner, such as Georgetown University.
11. Guide and mentor residents and fellows on human subjects’ protection and research privacy including fundamentals of IRB submissions.
12. Guide and mentor residents and fellows on research design including:
· Developing complex research design, including interventional studies
· Leading quantitative and qualitative analyses, results interpretation, developing research-oriented deliverables
· Developing and applying advanced statistical models
13. Collaborate with other disciplines including Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Risk Management to evaluate the impact of interventions designed to improve surgical outcomes.
14. Consistently demonstrate support for compliance in the performance of job duties and responsibilities by a) developing and maintaining knowledge of, and performing job functions in compliance with, rules, regulations, policies, and statutes that affect his/her job; b) maintaining knowledge of and performing job functions in compliance with MedStar Health policies and procedures; and c) reporting compliance concerns in an appropriate and timely manner.
15. Perform other duties as needed or assigned.
Education: PhD, DNP, MD degree i n health services research, education research, nursing, health social science, or behavioral science field.
Experience: The successful candidate must have some healthcare experience and is comfortable and effective working on medical research studies independently. The ideal candidate has at least 3 years of experience in medical research out outcomes with a successful track record of publications and funding, however candidates with less experience will be considered. Experience in presentation; grant funding and supervision/mentoring of others involved in research (i.e., students) is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.

INTERNAL CONTACTS: Works closely with others in Surgical Departments and other leaders throughout the organization. Develop strong relationships with all functions within the MedStar Health Research Institute and other MedStar organizations/hospitals.

COMUNICATION: Communicates effectively with multiple audiences using a variety of formats. Examples include: written communications to members, researchers, staff and other stakeholders that clearly outline the situation and action items; verbal presentations and briefings to the research and education managers, senior leaders and other parties; presenting at national and international meetings and to outside groups regarding a variety of issues affecting the research and education.

JOB ENVIRONMENT: The individual will be spending considerable time, reading and working in the surgical department with frequent interaction with surgeons and other clinical staff. He/she will be subject to the rigors and pressures of researching, writing and publishing, as well as those associated with being in a clinical environment.
