RESEARCH SPECIALIST/SOFTWARE ENGINEER (PUBLIC TRANSIT SOFTWARE), Civil and Environmental Engineering-Transit Research Group, to support research with the MBTA, with the goal of making public transit work better. The research focuses on using the big data produced by the MBTA's automated fare collection (AFC), automated vehicle location (AVL), automated passenger counting (APC), and related systems to support innovative approaches to performance measurement, planning, and operations. The primary responsibility will be working with MIT and MBTA research staff to specify, build, and maintain a reliable data platform to support the integrated querying of the above systems. This will require creative application and knowledge of a variety of database platforms (MSSQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL), experience with data mining tools (PERL, Python, JAVA), a creative approach to problem solving when working with complex legacy systems, and the ability to work independently with potential software users with limited technical background. Specific responsibilities include integration of data sourced from legacy and newer applications to enable the development of new decision support tools; development, maintenance, and support of a variety of database applications; developing prototypes and proofs-of-concept to support technical strategy development, project planning, and risk management; writing and maintaining software specifications and performing testing and QA for new internally-developed software systems; and producing user documentation and training users.

REQUIREMENTS: a bachelor's degree; at least one year of applicable software development experience; fluency with the languages, tools, standards, and methods powering today's open software architectures; basic knowledge of system administration; ability to learn about new technologies and environments in a self-directed manner; strong analytical and communication skills; and proven interest in public transportation and public service.
