Job Title: Research and Process Engineer

Division: Research and Development/Technology

Location: Cambridge, MN

FLSA code: Exempt

Purpose of the Position:
Thorough understanding of the fundamental principles and technology underlying manufacturing in the SunOpta Ingredients Group. Use this knowledge to support and/or lead new product development projects, as well as process improvement and optimization and process scale-up.

Required Skills

Manage New Product Development (NPD) Projects

Follow NPD procedure to ensure project remains on scope and provides value to the Company.

Communicate effectively with different project teams and stakeholders to advance the project.

Coordinate pilot and commercial trials, as well as document and interpret their results.

Leads financial evaluation of new products manufacturing costs

Produce R&D data to support New Product Development Projects

Design and execute experimental work at bench, pilot and commercial scale using sound scientific rigor

Interpret experimental results and recommend course of action

Use current, relevant technical literature to propose possible technologies as solutions in NPD projects

Produces relevant and technically sound written reports to document R&D activities.

Identify Savings and Process Optimization Opportunities

Understand mass and energy balances at each of our facilities

Understand product costs and identifies potential savings opportunities

Manages process optimization projects upon request

Develops expertise in a specific technical specialization area

Supports deployment of new unit operations

Becomes the “go-to” person in the group for troubleshooting of specific new process equipment

Required Experience

The ideal candidate will have a B.S in Chemical Engineering or Food Engineering with 3-5 years of experience in Food Ingredients R&D or a Master's degree in Chemical or Food Engineering with 0-3 years of experience.

Strong knowledge of chemical engineering including; Food Science and Safety, Design of Experiments, and Carbohydrate Engineering.

Strong project managment skills required with laboratory work experience and scientific literature search capacity.

Excellent written and oral communication skills
