Reserve officers are part-time sworn police officers with the same arrest powers and authority as full-time officers. Reserve Officers are primarily used to augment the Patrol Division, but may also supplement other units within the Department. This recruitment will be used to develop a pool of applicants for the Reserve Officer Program within the Police Department at Florida Atlantic University. Screening of qualified applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed. Your application will be maintained in this pool for consideration through May 31, 2013. Individuals in the current pool must renew their application for inclusion in the Reserve Officer Pool each period by reapplying to the pool. Reserve Officers will provide law enforcement services and police duties associated with the protection, safety, and welfare of faculty, staff, students, and visitors to Florida Atlantic University. The position requires all applicants to be a certified law enforcement officer, vested with authority to bear arms and make arrests. Duties include proactively patrolling the University to prevent crime and maintain the peace, conduct investigations, pursue, apprehend, and arrest law violators or suspected law violators. The police department is dedicated to providing our Reserve Officers with professional training and practical law enforcement experience. Reserve officers shall not be paid for volunteer services to the Department. Volunteer services include, but are not limited to, patrol duties and training. Reserve officers are required to perform services a minimum of sixteen hours a month. Reserve officers may be given the opportunity to perform compensated work for the Department only on an occasional or sporadic basis. Such paid assignments include, but are not limited to, special details and sporting events. Paid assignment opportunities are not guaranteed; and reserve officers shall have no expectation for compensated work. A reserve officer may not accept or perform any paid work at FAU in the same workweek in which volunteer duties are performed.

All Reserve Officer Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for consideration in the Reserve Officer program: Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943 of the Florida Statutes by having a high school diploma/GED and have one year law enforcement experience. Must also be a certified law enforcement officer, vested with the authority to bear arms and make arrests. Additionally, applicants must be 19 years of age and a U.S. citizen, must pass physical and psychological examinations, a rigorous background investigation and not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor. A valid driver's license is required. An AA degree in Criminal Justice, Police Administration or related field from an accredited institution of higher education may substitute for the required one year of law enforcement experience. The following are additional required items: Ability to work in stressful and sometimes hazardous conditions. Ability to safely operate a patrol vehicle and emergency equipment. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to grasp criminal and traffic laws: make sound decisions. Ability to exercise restraint and tact with all members of the University community and the general public. Ability to physically and mentally satisfy state and departmental training requirements. Ability to effectively work without direct supervision. Ability to work well with fellow officers: teamwork concept.
