DESCRIPTION

Are you a business major looking for a cool internship? Are you interested in future retail management, merchandising, or owning your own small business? Want to gain work experience and build your skills at the nicest Thrift Shop on the Northwest side? We are looking for an undergraduate or graduate student in the Chicago area who is majoring in Retail Management, Marketing or Advertising.

Norwood Crossing is seeking a Retail Management Intern to join our team. We are nestled in a historic district called Norwood Park on Chicago's North side. We are 116 year old organization that is in the initial stages of building the most resident and employee focused, state-of the-art facility in the area.

nor.VOL.ution seeks a responsible, organized and detail oriented Retail Management Intern for our beautiful new Norwood Life Society Thrift Shop on the Northwest side of Chicago. The exciting part-time, unpaid internship will provide you with relevant business experience, mentoring and professional references. Use your talents and skills to help us make our shop more attractive and help us build our customer base. We are looking for you to become a productive team member, provide excellent customer service and learn aspects of retail management in a live setting.

nor.VOL.ution is the volunteer program sponsored by Norwood Life Society; a 501c(3) organization dedicated to enhancing the independence and well-being of older adults. Volunteers from nor.VOL.ution staff the Thrift Shop under the direction of nor.VOL.ution's Director of Volunteer Services.

Internship duration will be 90 days with an opportunity for extension.

DUTIES

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Learn our inventory, our policies and procedures and how to price and attractively display gently used and new clothing, household goods, books, jewelry, artwork, collectables and furniture
  • Learn the cash register and provide helpful and friendly customer service
  • Learn to bring in more revenue via eBay by researching, photographing and writing item descriptions that successfully sell selected inventory
  • Assist with the design of our 4 large window displays, develop ideas for future seasonal presentations
  • Assist with volunteer management and scheduling
  • Other duties as assigned and appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Bachelors degree in Marketing or related field preferred (or in progress).
  • Ability to make independent decisions, follow instructions and to accept constructive criticism.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and professionally with personnel, residents, family members visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and will have a keen understanding of the seniors' market;
  • Must be proactive, self-disciplined and able to demonstrate a high level of productivity, responsibility and accountability.
  • Must have a high degree of interpersonal skill which to deal successfully with clients, community and agency contacts.
  • Must have empathy for, and an understanding of, the needs of the elderly.
  • Solid computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) with an interest in social media
  • An energetic and professional attitude
  • Good customer service skills
  • Commit to at least twelve hours on site each week
  • Be able to work Saturdays and have reliable transportation
  • Have an interest in nor.VOL.ution's mission and in non-profit work
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds, climb stairs, and stand for much of the day
