The Revenue Accountant plays an integral role in the revenue cash receipt recording process from which the Company determines and records its share of oil and gas well sales revenue and pays owners their share of revenues. The individual is responsible for recording all revenue from the sale of oil and gas production; prepares all required internal and external revenue reports under general supervision. The role also directly impacts the state and federal regulatory processes from which production taxes and royalties are calculated.

Revenue verification, preparation and coding for assigned properties

Reconcile assigned accounts monthly for compliance with SOX 404

Carry out royalty, working interest and purchaser relations/problem solving and answer owner inquiries

Prepare and update procedures and documentation of assigned tasks

Set up new division orders from split streams

Prepare monthly royalty payments, wires and owners adjustments to clear payable balances

Prepare special and detailed analysis of general ledger accounts and trend and variance analysis

Perform analysis of current processes and recommend changes

Prepare monthly journal entries for pipeline imbalances and JIB netting

Perform special analyses and projects as assigned

Provide monthly reporting for regions

Provide requested Revenue information to auditors in the examination of JIB/Revenue accounting treatment

Assist the outside and internal auditors in their examination of SM Energy’s consolidated financial statements by providing requested information

Assist in training new and contract employees

Conduct business with the highest ethical standards; demonstrate decision-making skills that ensure the safety of all persons associated with SM facilities

Other duties as assigned

Bachelor’s Degree from a four year University in Accounting or Finance is preferred

Minimum of 3 year of accounting or revenue experience; oil and gas industry experience is preferred

Public Accounting Experience is preferred

Excellent skills in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook. Excalibur Accounting software knowledge is a plus

Ability to apply practical theories, methods and concepts to perform accounting tasks and projects

Excellent written / verbal communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to write complex accounting memos

Ability to demonstrate a strong work ethic, critical thinking and attention to detail

Ability to perform detailed analysis and calculations

Strong organization skills, detail oriented, self-motivated

Strive to continually build knowledge and skills

Ability to thrive in both an independent and collaborative work environment

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Occasional travel may be required
