Risk is one of PayPal’s core competencies and is a key contributor to the company’s profitability and the customer value proposition, which is focused on secure payments. The Risk team is responsible for the global approach to assessing various buyer-side and seller-side risks PayPal takes on (including identity fraud, seller fraud, account takeover, credit) and the treatments, actions and experiences triggered by the results of the Risk assessment and used by PayPal to control losses.

We are looking to add a recent college graduate to the team in San Jose, CA


Drive high-impact projects in the Policy or Product/Experience area (e.g., collusion fraud, user authentication product, credit card model, bank risk monitoring dashboard)

Significant level of accountability for performance of the area of ownership

Day-to-day responsibilities - Policy / Product and Experience

Identifying (via research, analysis, brainstorming) vulnerabilities / gaps / opportunities within the current portfolio of PayPal’s Consumer Risk controls

Building a business case for the opportunity – sizing the benefit or the magnitude of the potential loss exposure

Based on the analysis, formulating a policy to ensure the optimal balance between user experience, business enablement, and loss exposure related to the planned innovations / improvements

Advocating with Risk and Business Unit leadership to gain agreement around the business case and allocate resources to the proposed approach for capturing the benefit

Designing solutions and experiences; taking into account potential commonalities with or dependencies on existing solutions; working with partners in Technology as well as other teams within/outside Risk on end-to-end execution

Job Requirements

Strong analytical skills: ability to build quick estimates using back-of-the-envelope analysis, structure (and, if needed, execute) more complex analyses, pull together business cases, navigate multi-dimensional sets of tradeoffs. Above all, these roles call for comfort with data – ability to manipulate it, question its validity, interpret it, and develop recommendations based on it

Strong knowledge of relational databases and data warehouse principles; experience in SQL, SAS, Excel and Visual Basic and experience with Teradata and Oracle a plus

Demonstrated experience in data analysis and visualization,

Strong knowledge of Statistical and Optimization concepts

Comfort with and an understanding of technology; interest in working with and developing new products that serve the needs of buyers and sellers on PayPal

Ability to formulate fact-based strategies and driving their execution

Ability to manage a large, diverse set of to-do’s – prioritize, stay on top of multiple workstreams, monitor progress

Strong communication skills – a sense of appropriate communication mechanism/approach to use given context/circumstances. Experience working with cross-functional, geographically distributed teams, managing by influence

Ability to get up to speed on a new content area very quickly – PayPal is constantly innovating by introducing new products and going after new markets. Team members are expected to continuously upgrade their understanding of PayPal’s risk exposure and to tirelessly innovate in developing and deploying increasingly surgical risk control approaches
