The Vice President for Finance and Administration division is seeking a Risk Manager.
The University Risk Manager has overall responsibility for the property and liability insurance program of the institution, including self-insurance. In concert with Environmental Health and Safety, Workers’ Compensation and numerous other institutional stakeholders, the Risk Manager identifies and analyzes property and casualty risks and executes risk financing endeavors that support the University’s strategic objectives. The Risk Manager is charged with the responsibility of continuously improving the University’s risk profile by enhancing coverage while reducing insurance premium costs.
Facilitates the work of the University Risk Management Initiative ( URMI ), a major risk management project intended to negate all debilitating risks of the University. Coordinates the workings of the University Risk Council, a group of executives charged with the responsibility for identifying, analyzing and managing significant threats to the University as a part of this initiative.
The Risk Manager directs the design, negotiation and implementation of the University’s property and liability insurance programs with insurance brokers and its carriers. The Risk Manager is responsible for insurance premiums in excess of $1 million. The Risk Manager also manages the self-insurance programs of the University and reviews all payment requests relating to insurance in order to identify and prevent duplicative insurance purchases.
Participates in and directs the efforts of the Inter-University Council Insurance Consortium to reduce the risk management costs of the University. Serves on the Underwriting Committee of this pool which is responsible for the transfer of risk of all thirteen of its members.
Notifies the University’s insurance carriers with respect to large liability losses in a timely fashion by means of coordination with the Office of Legal Affairs.
Handles all of those liability claims not addressed by Legal Affairs to include bodily injury and property damage claims arising from the alleged negligent acts of University employees. In addition, all property damage claims involving University buildings are handled by this position.
Performs policy and coverage analysis and makes recommendations to address coverage gaps regarding complex and unique risk exposures. Fields insurance coverage questions from University staff members.
Maintains accurate records of claim costs to employ loss analysis for the identification of trends and the revision of financing strategies or opportunities for risk control.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in finance, risk management or related field and five years progressive experience in risk management or insurance or a master’s degree in business, insurance or risk management and three years of related experience.
The ability to communicate effectively at all levels and in all mediums.
Proficiency in the full suite of MS Office.
Associate in Risk Management ( ARM ), Certified Risk Manager ( CRM ) or Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter ( CPCU ) designations/certifications.
