POSITION SUMMARY :
Under the general direction of the Executive Director, Marketing and Communications, the Director, Public Affairs & Digital Media provides strategic leadership in the development of proactive communications, media, and marketing strategies to enhance the visibility and public knowledge of Morehouse School of Medicine’s mission, accomplishments and major initiatives. The Director will handle organizational functions such as media; community; research; conflict mediation; and employee and Board of Trustees relations. He or she must understand and support the goals and objectives of a variety of MSM constituents, and must be able to establish and maintain a collaborative, cooperative relationship with them. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have existing, long-standing and demonstrated relationships with representatives from local and national print and broadcast media.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Lead the planning and development of all media/marketing communication functions, including but not limited to the following:
Assist in the strategic planning and project management of marketing campaigns and initiatives, consistent with institutional goals and objectives.
Manage communications and marketing-related activities for the Institution.
Prepare and distribute news releases, media advisories and calendar information to the appropriate media, as well as devising pitching techniques to ensure placement and/or coverage.
Develop and implement all internal & external media/communication strategies and plans related to MSM’s overall image and public communications, including – press releases, promotional print materials, run of shows, scripts, and visual presentations; research data; identify trends and prepare documentation.
Provide creativity, original development in writing, editing, and managing the production of The Tablet, and other special publications, as assigned.
Assist in developing and writing the MSM Magazine, E-News articles, op-eds and other appropriate communications for distribution, as appropriate.
Oversee design and layout services for publications and marketing materials.
Assist in providing public relations counsel to key faculty and staff.
Manage the maintenance of public affairs records, files and other materials.
Attend various community meetings, activities (i.e., professional societies, communication organizations, colleges/universities, government, etc.) on behalf of the Institution.
Serve as marketing liaison with businesses in conjunction with Institutional Advancement team.
Work closely with the President’s Office on crisis communications, conflict resolution, and general communications including writing and editing speeches, letters and other correspondence.
Provide direction for the Institution through task management in areas of marketing (internal and external relations), communication (print and electronic publications) web strategy (updates and presence), and media relations.
Develop proactive MSM story ideas and suggest other activities to highlight MSM’s public image.
Maintain active working relationships with key decision-makers in Dean’s Office, Faculty/Student representatives, Community Health Services, OIA , and outside agencies to remain up-to-date on campus and community-related activities, key institution accomplishments and marketing programs.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION / TRAINING :
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or a related field; advanced degree preferred from a regionally accredited University/College.
A minimum of 8-10 years leadership experience developing, implementing and managing successful public affairs, public/media relations and/or institutional communications programs, preferably in an higher education or health care environment.
