Job Summary

The Sales Engineer (SE) is the primary presales technical resource for the field sales force and is responsible for actively driving and managing the technology evaluation stage of the sales process, working in conjunction with the sales team as the key technical advisor and product advocate for our products. This includes being able to articulate technology and product positioning to wholesale carrier customers while being able to identify all technical issues of assigned accounts to assure complete customer satisfaction through all stages of the sales process, and being able to establish and maintain strong relationships throughout the sales cycle.

The SE supports the sales force in attaining their stated revenue objectives by providing presales technical assistance on wholesale special access transport services provided to wholesale carrier customers. The SE provides detailed network design, engineering recommendations and network consulting for the opportunities that are identified by the field sales force. A significant emphasis of this position will be on technical leadership, which includes maintaining and upgrading the technical expertise of our entire commercial sales team. This position requires a high level of industry expertise in voice applications, data network hardware, LAN/wireless/WAN designs, network protocols including IP applications and architectures.

In Conjunction with the sales professional, this position is responsible for assisting with network discovery of the carrier customer's current network, provide network design recommendations and provide a pricing model back to the sales force for presentation to meet the carrier customer's needs. The Sales Engineer serves as the subject matter expert (SME)to the sales teams for special access transport services.

Job Responsibilities:
Provide pre-sales consultation and assist the sales team in the discovery process for opportunities. Provide strategic, long-term planning with sales teams on prospective opportunities. Actively participate in sales calls for more challenging solutions including managedIP, data applications, private networks and business systems. Attend a minimum number of appointments.
Gather pertinent data and inputs from the customer site. Research possible solutions including contacts with vendors and our Network Services group. Design, configure and price all complex voice and data networks and provide sales engineering expertise for complex sales opportunities. Develop business cases (CAA) and manage them through the PTT in a timely manner with thorough review and approval.
Design practical and cost effective solutions that meet customer needs, utilize our existing or planned network, and ensure maximum reliability. Provide technical specifications, network designs for sales proposals and bids. Jointly present solutions to customers, support recommendations and answer pertinent questions. Follow up with appropriate documentation.
As assigned for complex network or business systems solutions, manage transition from design and sale to implementation by our Network Services and Network Operations group. Working in concert with a Project Coordinator, supervise installation, test and turn up and maintain contact with the customer's technical staff.
Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) and technical resource for Internet, private networks (LAN/MAN/WAN), converged voice/data solutions, virtual private networks (VPN), managedIP, business systems and managed services. Strengthen technical competence, attend OEM and vendor training and keep certifications current. Maintain knowledge of current and planned TDS applications through communications with Marketing, Product Management, Product Development and Network Services groups. Develop and present sales training materials that provide the technical background necessary to sell and support our applications.
Prepares and presents training sessions at lunch and learns, sales meetings and outside engagements.
Maintains technical expertise by meeting with OEMs and vendors to evaluate product and service offerings.
Assists supervisor with other assignments as requested.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree or higher OR 4 + years professional work experience
5+ years telecommunications experience
Must have and maintain a valid drivers license

Other Qualifications:
Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA) certification or it must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
Prefer appropriate industry certification including the following: BICSI (RCCD and/or LAN specialist), Cisco (CCNA or more), Mitel (200, 3300, or 6000), Nortel (CDS and/or CDE), Microsoft (MCSE).
Technical competence through knowledge of and experience with: Voice and data network design and engineering including telephony and voice architecture and switching. TCP/IP, IPX, Ethernet, Frame Relay and Packet Switching, ATM and Cell Switching and Virtual Private Networks. IP routing, subnetting, tunneling, bridging, gateways and switching (layer 2 &3). Routers, data Switches, LAN wiring, wireless access points, firewalls, multiplexors, DACS, T3/T1/DS0's. LAN, MAN and WAN computing technologies and architectures.
Ability to uncover, understand and evaluate a business need and provide appropriate data and/or voice network requirements to meet the need.
Ability to interface effectively with various customers, OEMs, vendors and partners at the technical level and propose viable solutions in real time during customer meetings
Strong computer skills including MS Excel, PowerPoint and Visio
Ability to gather relevant facts and develop and successfully pursue a business case including revenue opportunities, network diagrams and capital requirements.
Ability to communicate directly to technical teams and provide network architecture layout based on solutions' performance needs.
Strong project management skills including the ability to lead project teams
Excellent communication skills (written & oral presentation).

Ability to travel (Possible travel of 25-30% required).
