The Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard Trainee attends classes in the City of Newport Beach Basic Lifeguarding Academy in order to learn skills and techniques used in ocean rescue, emergency decision making, first responder medical treatment and public assistance.

Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard Trainees may be hired as a Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard I based on performance during the Training Academy and operational needs. If offered a summer schedule, Seasonal Ocean Lifeguards are expected to accept the schedule and work through Labor Day. The starting pay range for Lifeguard I will be ($16.76 - $18.48 per hour), with future opportunities to advance as a Lifeguard II ($18.48 - $20.36 per hour) and Lifeguard III ($20.56 - $22.69 per hour).

In order to be considered for the Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard Trainee Competitive Test and Training Academy, applicants must apply on-line for the Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard Trainee position.

SELECTION PROCEDURE: Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard Trainee Competitive Test to be conducted on Sunday, March 17, 2013. The examination will begin at Lifeguard Headquarters located at the base of the Newport Pier. Metered parking is available. CHECK-IN REQUIRED BY 8:30am with PICTURE IDENTIFICATION and SIGNED WAIVER FORM.

Essential Duties:

The City of Newport Beach Basic Lifeguard Academy (BLA) is a 100 hour course certified by the United States Lifesaving Association. The academy is designed to prepare and evaluate the suitability of Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard Trainees to become Newport Beach Seasonal Ocean Lifeguards. The BLA is a competitively scored program.

TRAINING ACADEMY SCHEDULE: Those who become eligible for the Training Academy will be notified March 19, 2013, following the completion of the Competitive Test. Candidates will be required to begin the City hiring process to include scheduling a Medical Exam. Attendance in training is MANDATORY! Your absence from any training may disqualify you from further consideration. Please check in advance for any conflicting dates.

6. Sunday, May 5th – 8:00AM – 5:00PM

2. Sunday, April 21st – 8:00AM – 5:00PM

8. Sunday, May 12th – 7:00AM – 3:00PM

4. Sunday, April 28th – 8:00AM – 5:00PM

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Knowledge of:

Safe work practices; and

Physical activities in potentially adverse conditions including cold water, large surf, strong currents and other marine hazards.

Ability to:

Attend all scheduled Training Academy classes;

Learn water safety, rescue, CPR and first aid techniques;

Participate in vigorous physical activities in potentially adverse conditions including cold water, large surf, strong currents and other marine hazards;

Appear for work on time;

Follow directions from a supervisor;

Understand and follow posted work rules and procedures;

Accept constructive criticism; and

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, specifically the general public and employees.

Experience & Training and License/Certificate:

Training & Experience

No experience is required.

Licenses & Certificates

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license is highly desirable.

Age

16 years of age as of April 1, 2013

Medical

A physical examination including a drug test will be administered to applicants by City selected medical professionals . The vision requirement is 20-40 correctable in an aquatic environment.

Other

A completed Release of Liability & Waiver Form is required of all participants and must be turned in at tryouts on Sunday, March 17, 2013. Release of Liability & Waiver Forms are available by clicking here or in-person at Lifeguard Headquarters located at the base of the Newport Pier. IMPORTANT: Minors under the age of 18 must have this form signed by a parent or guardian.

A minimum score of 70% on the Oral Interview is required to be placed on the eligibility list. Candidates on the eligibility list may be invited to attend the Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard Training Academy based on their overall score from the testing process.

APPLICATION/COMPETITIVE TEST REGISTRATION PROCEDURE:

Application must be made using the following procedure:

1. Enter the City website at www.newportbeachca.gov, click on Jobs, click on City Employment Opportunities, locate the Lifeguard Trainee recruitment at the bottom of the page. Click the Apply button in the upper right-hand corner to complete the online application in full, including job history. Candidates may include volunteer work and participation in sports or other teams/organizations in their job history.

2. Submit the electronic application by clicking the accept button.

3. Print a copy of the Release of Liability and Waiver Form or obtain one in-person at Lifeguard Headquarters located at the base of the Newport Pier and bring completed form to the tryouts. IMPORTANT: Minors under the age of 18 must have this form signed by a parent or guardian.

The filing period will begin January 16, 2013 and will end promptly at 5:00 PM March 13, 2013.

Resumes can be submitted with the application. If invited to the Oral Interview, candidates will be required to bring a resume and two (2) reference letters.

Candidates passing the application screening process will be emailed an invitation to compete for a position in the Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard Training Academy on or about March 14, 2013. Emails will be sent to the registered email address for the application and all other steps in the recruitment. Candidates should always check their email for confirmation of the next step in the process. Phone inquiries will not be accepted.

A Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard Trainee Competitive Test will be conducted on Sunday, March 17, 2013. The examination will begin at Lifeguard Headquarters located at the base of the Newport Pier. At the conclusion of the Competitive Test, the top candidates with a combined score from the Ocean Swim and Ocean Run-Swim-Run will be invited to an Oral Interview scheduled for March 18, 2013. Candidates successful in the Oral Interview process will be placed on an eligible list and may be invited to attend the Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard Training Academy based on their overall score from the testing process. Candidates selected will undergo an extensive background process including criminal history, driving record, civil records check, past & current employers, drug & alcohol abuse, education, and reference contacts. Candidates passing the background investigation may receive a conditional offer of employment for the Academy contingent upon a medical examination by City selected medical professionals.
Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, City of Newport Beach Employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly.
