The work involves supervising and performing technical procedures in the laboratories of the Hematology Division of a clinical laboratory. This is a technical laboratory position responsible for supervising and performing a variety of hematology procedures and related tests. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Chief Hematology Technologist or higher level laboratory employee. Supervision is exercised over lower level technologist and laboratory assistants. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Supervises and participates in such regular hematology procedures, tests, and examinations as blood counts, sedimentation rates, morphology studies, coagulation factor assays, compatibility tests and other blood bank tests, hemoglobin electrophoreses, radio immunoassays, etc.; Supervises making of solutions and reagents, setting up of equipment, and maintenance of equipment and supplies; Assists with the training of students by demonstrating techniques, assigning work practice, and evaluating progress; Supervises workers by making assignments, training in new procedures, and reviewing work; Performs the more complex procedures and assists with research and special studies; Collects specimens from patients, which may include phlebotomy; Prepares reports and keeps records of unit''s work and keeps abreast of latest developments in the field. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of modern laboratory procedures, terminology and equipment used in a Hematology laboratory and Blood Bank; good knowledge of abnormalities found in blood specimens and of the medical significance of such conditions; ability to perform advanced laboratory procedures; ability to apply meticulous attention to and accurately control all stages of identification of blood specimens through the performance of clinical tests; ability to accurately control all stages of preparation of blood and blood products used in transfusions; ability to prepare detailed reports; ability to supervise the work of others; ability to analyze and interpret data; ability to perform tests with a high degree of accuracy and to exercise safety precautions, ability to get along well with others; initiative; resourcefulness; good judgment; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor''s degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology, Medical Technology or related title which meets the standards set forth in Title 8, Article 165 of New York State’s Education Law, Subpart 79-13 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education and two (2) years of experience as a laboratory technologist in the field of hematology and/or blood banking; or: B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor''s degree in Biology or related field and three (3) years of experience as a laboratory technologist in the field of hematology and/or blood banking; or: C) Possession of a license or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department and two (2) years of experience as a laboratory technologist in the field of hematology and/or blood banking. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility for licensure or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist at time of application; Possession of a license or limited permit to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department at time of appointment; Possession of a license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as issued by the New York State Education Department at time of permanent appointment. NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements
