Performs para-professional and independent duties assisting in complex legal research, preparation of pleadings, legal documents and reports, and coordinating problem resolution with attorneys, adjusters, and workers' compensation liaisons.
Drafts legal documents such as pleadings, trial and appellate briefs, general correspondence, reports, opinions, and settlement documents.
Researches court rules to ensure compliance with jurisdictional requirements.
Performs complex specialized legal research for attorneys, and accesses specialized databases for workers' compensation claims.
Communicates and requests information for attorneys, from other office staff, agencies, and courts through written and verbal correspondence.
Drafts and updates necessary legal forms and obtains medical, personnel and payroll records and other confidential documents for attorneys' use in litigation and/or mediation.
Reviews, analyzes, and drafts summaries of records.
Creates and maintains fully indexed and cross-referenced database of legal briefs, memoranda, pleadings, opinions, forms and other legal documents; Creates and maintains specialized workers' compensation law library for researching legal inquiries.
Assists attorneys in preparing for litigation and mediation proceedings; Prepares calculations to determine County's financial exposure in cases; Attends proceedings with attorneys.
Supervises other paralegals, legal secretaries, law clerks and temps in accomplishing assigned tasks in workers' compensation cases.
Attends training sessions on new legal research programs and procedures; Provides support and guidance for other paralegals concerning these tools; Attends seminars and conferences to ensure paralegal skills and maintain Certified Legal Assistant certification.
Refers attorneys, paralegals, legal secretaries, law clerks, and other staff to appropriate law library, Internet or Westlaw legal research tools to assist them in legal research assignments.
Identifies and arranges for expert witnesses for court cases.
May serve as liaison between attorneys, mediators/arbitrators and the public responding to questions and providing information, as needed.
Assist Paralegals with the interpretation of organization policies and procedures.
Performs business related activities and functions regarding legal office administrative practices and procedures.
Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the laws of Florida and other legislation pertaining to Hillsborough County .
Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of legal research.
Ability to operate a computer to access automated databases and legal reference materials.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in order to draft legal documents and interact with the public and governmental agencies and employees.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with county officials, employees, court officials and the general public.
Ability to compile, analyze and organize data and information.
Ability to work effectively with others.
Ability and willingness to provide assistance in legal office administrative practices and procedures.
Ability to supervise and train paralegals in the methods of legal research.
