The position will conduct remote-site interviews to determine customer requirements and select materials, design parameters, design partners and final objectives. The position will then create designs through a cooperative and iterative process and produce single or multiple prototypes. The position will work with multiple contractors, government staff partners and internal MilTech Field Engineers to create designs and prototypes. The position will then demonstrate the prototypes to end customers and make changes based on feedback. The position will report to a MilTech Field Engineer.
Assist with and create designs and prototypes, material selection, fitness for use and other tasks associated with MSU MilTech’s work for military customers. The employee will work directly with government customers and MilTech engineers to assess the customer’s requirements, provide written and drawn solution options, discuss the solution options with MilTech staff and government customers, create patterns, select materials, create prototypes and alter materials and patterns to provide a final solution to the customer. The employee will create final patterns and bills of materials as directed by MilTech engineers.
The employee will create original designs for stand-alone items and accessories. The employee will attend and engage in Field User Evaluations in remote areas.
The employee will use prior personal military experience and design knowledge to create and assist in the creation of unique end items and accessories. The position requires discretion when working with vendors, design partners, employees, end customers, and particularly enlisted military staff. This is essential to the timely and effective development of military gear and can only happen when the employee develops rapport with all stake holders in the process.
The employee will have regular phone, email, and personal contact with all stake holders and must communicate professionally and clearly. The employee will answer to a MilTech Field Engineer who is the lead designer, however, this employee will create unique designs and will require sound judgment in the creation of these designs.
Successful experience developing or assisting in the development of sewn products for military users
At least 4 years of active duty military service, including at least two years service as an NCO, in an infantry MOS and at least one active duty deployment involving extensive use of military sewn products in dismounted operations as well as the use of ancillary military equipment that impacts the design of sewn products
Experience creating sewn product patterns
Experience working from provided patterns and creating multiple prototypes
Experience working directly with government customers in the development of multiple types of sewn product prototypes
Experience working directly with military customers and demonstrating prototype features and functions
Experience successfully altering prototypes and patterns to reflect changes in prototype features and functions
Hands on experience sewing on multiple types of industrial sewing equipment
Experience selecting materials (fabric, findings, buckles, etc.) for government sewn products
More than one year deployment for the US military
Deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan
Bachelor’s degree in art or field directly related to design of soft goods
Experience with pattern design software.
Be able to represent MilTech in a professional manner when interacting with clients, internal and external personnel
Have extensive knowledge of military protocol
Be able to work cooperatively with MilTech staff and the MilTech Engineer responsible for soft goods development
Be able to travel independently and work directly with enlisted and officer military personnel
Create unique, cost effective, manufacturable designs that meet the needs of the end customer
Be able to effectively collaborate with MilTech, MSU, DoD, government, civilian, internal and external personnel in order to accomplish multiple operational goals
In accordance with MSU policy, hiring will be conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
This position involves working with projects which involve export controls and, thus, you may not be eligible for this position (depending on the country of origin) if you are not a U.S. citizen or green card holder.
Position is located in Bozeman, Montana.
Occasional travel on short notice and planned travel when necessary to interact with DoD customers: Employee must be available to travel throughout the Continental United States as well as Alaska, Hawaii, U.S territories and possesions, and possibly other worldwide locations with or without accommodations.
Employee must operate multiple sewing machines
Employee must be able to lift and move fabric
