This position is primarily responsible for research, design, planning, and implementation of Redhat Linux-based infrastructure projects requiring a high degree of technical knowledge and systems integration experience. The preferred incumbent will have experience working in a scientific/research environment in a variety of technical areas, including networking, storage and server platforms. Experience with high-availability systems, where uptime and reliability are critical, is essential.
Incumbent is considered a technical expert who is responsible for the Institute's IMAP Email system, Spam filter appliances, Web server infrastructure, and multiple computational and research-related servers running on the Institute's VMware virtualization platform. Additional responsibilities include SAN provisioning and storage management, server-side network troubleshooting, configuration and monitoring of backup/archive storage systems, and working with Lab staff to provision appropriate hardware and software resources for research functions.
Incumbent must have experience with Apache, PHP, Perl, Python, as well as experience with configuration management tools such as cfengine and puppet. Position is responsible for establishing and maintaining a high level of credibility and quality for services provided by the IT department. A large majority of time is spent on project work, with operational support responsibilities as needed when expertise is required to solve difficult problems.
Incumbent is supervised at the level of general direction and reports to the Senior Director, IT.
A Bachelorâ€™s degree in computer science or other engineering field or equivalent combination of education and related experience in the Information Technology field.
- UNIX Focus: 5+ years experience installing and implementing RedHat Linux and third party software products.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule based on workload and incident response. Has some on-call responsibilities to include evenings, weekends and holiday coverage as needed.
Willing to sign an employee confidentiality agreement.
Position requires constant balancing, seeing, touching and feeling, grasping, lifting up to 20 pounds, hearing, talking, reading, writing, reasoning, communicating, noise exposure and working inside.
