A STS International Senior Associate is responsible for utilizing basic research skills and applying educational background to identify potential tax issues. In this role, the STS International Senior Associate will be charged with gathering required client information necessary to prepare tax accrual workpapers, to utilize tax software applications to complete simple tax returns and participating in tax planning.

External Job Description - Essential Duties/Functions
Research

- Identifies situations when research is necessary providing an outline of the issue(s) and the appropriate source of research to be conducted

- Analyzes researched facts and the sources utilized prior to composing a detailed report of the research findings

- Prepares WTA and tax returns as appropriate

Tax Compliance

- Ensures clients comply with applicable authorities while identifying options for minimizing the client’s tax and reporting burdens

- Obtains required client information to utilize in the preparation of tax filings

- Documents all significant tax positions and conducts detailed review of basic returns to prepare notes for preparers in addition to raising potential tax issues

- Assists in the tax planning process and answers preparer questions

Tax Consulting

- Develops, recommends and implements standard tax methods to provide clients with maximum tax benefits related to current and future tax obligations

- Assists in the development of workplans for all assigned clients

- Identifies consulting opportunities to provide reduction in tax liability of client and provides support for client consulting projects

- Assists with the review of and response to notices from federal agencies

Tax Controversy

- Represents clients before any tax authority on contested issues, as appropriate, and with assistance and guidance from senior STS International professionals

Tax Related Software

- Utilizes Caseware, GoSystems, tax research databases and other tax-related software in the completion of assigned tasks

Tax Specialization

- Develops an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding International taxation and explores specializing in one or more international tax areas

- Assists in preparation of Tax Alerts in area of specialty

ASC 740-10

- Applies standards, firm policies and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48

- Develops understanding of standards, firm policies and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements regarding ASC 740-10

Strategy Development

- Assists in the preparation of studies of tax implications to identify alternative courses of actions to reduce tax liability

- Prepares studies of tax implications in an effort to provide client with alternative courses of action

Other duties as required

Supervisory Responsibilities:

- Supervises the day-to-day workload of STS International Associates and Interns on assigned engagements and reviews work product

- Ensures STS International Associates and Interns are trained on all relevant tax software

- Delivers periodic performance feedback and completes performance evaluations for STS International Associates and Interns

- Acts as mentor to STS International Associates and Interns, as appropriate

External Job Description - Qualifications
Education:

- Juris Doctorate degree preferred

- Current enrollment in Tax LL.M program required, member of the top 20% of LL.M program

- Bachelors degree in Accounting preferred

Experience:

- Two (2) to three (3) years of experience in taxation, preferably international taxation

- Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis preferred

- Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions high desired

- Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations and partnerships beneficial

License/Certifications:

- CPA and Law Review preferred

Software:

- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint

- Experience utilizing RIA, BNA, Lexis Nexis and/or Westlaw, beneficial

Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Excellent oral and written communication skills

- Strong analytical and basic research skills

- Solid organizational skills especially ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on details

- Ability to successfully multi-task while working independently or within a group environment

- Capable of working in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously

- Ability to research taxation topics and communicate or compose written analysis effectively

- Capable of effective managing a team of tax professionals and delegating work assignments as needed

- Capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with client personnel

- Ability to successfully interact with professionals at all levels

- Ability to prepare simple tax returns

- Basic knowledge of sources of relevant information utilized in tax filings as well as the most widely-used filing forms and awareness of other less widely used forms

- Basic understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation

- Basic knowledge and understanding of general calculations and cause / effect for taxable conditions on clients and the potential tax issues

- Strong legal writing background and familiarity with the IRAC method of analysis
