A Survey Technician I is responsible for a combination of the following essential job functions: measures horizontal and slope distances with steel tape by applying tension and temperature corrections while plumbing over survey points; operates self-reading and stadia rods in the performance of design, construction and level net surveys; operates prism rod for design, construction, control and topographic surveys; sets and plumbs foresight and back sight targets, prism glass, Global Positioning Systems receivers, and aerial targets for various surveys; sets survey points on centerline for right of way and control surveys; sets construction stakes, slope stakes and marker lath indicating cuts, fills, offsets or related information; maintains peg notes including measured distance, measured angles, slope chain reduction, and level peg notes; operates boat and outboard motor, sounding equipment and related equipment for hydrographic surveys; cuts and clears brush and other obstacles for line before and doing surveys; maintains survey tools and equipment; loads or stocks survey van with the proper equipment and supplies; operates levels, transits, total stations, Electronic Distance Measurement (E.D.M.) and other precision instruments; and drives a survey vehicle to various locations throughout the County of Los Angeles. Selection Requirements: Completion of 60 semester units, or the equivalent, including at least 24 units in surveying, at an accredited** college or university. Physical Class Physical Class IV – Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity. License(s) Required
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. Appointees may be required to provide automobiles and drive them in the County service at the rate of compensation allowed by the Board of Supervisors. Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of software programs such as Data Collector, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook to create, store and retrieve documents.

This examination will consist of an interview weighted 100% covering education and experience, personal fitness, and general ability to perform the duties of the position. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the interview in order to be placed on the eligible register. Special Information
FINGERPRINTING AND SECURITY CLEARANCE: Before a final appointment is made to this position, candidates are subject to security clearance which includes fingerprinting. An individual may be withheld from appointment, if he/she has a conviction record incompatible with the essential duties of the position for which he/she has applied. The names of candidates receiving a passing score in this examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
