This full time exempt position supports the Plymouth, NC lumber facility within the Softwood Lumber Business and reports to the Plymouth Unit Manager. The Safety Manager will lead the development and implementation of safety systems. This person will actively participate as a key member of the Plymouth Leadership Team, helping to direct efforts and resources in EH&S. The primary customers for this role are the Plymouth Leadership team.

Critical to this role is a demonstrated ability to influence, lead and role model safety. These skills will be critical in helping members of the leadership team understand how to create and cultivate a safety driven culture. This person will be involved in a broad range of safety management and leadership initiatives including annual planning, budgeting, and accountability and performance management. Additional responsibilities include providing technical safety support for the leadership team, coach/develop/support the Safety Committee, and will be the Plymouth Representative for the Atlantic Region Area Safety Team.

Key Functions:
Identify safety priorities and develop systems to reduce injuries, using the Health and Safety Exchange.

Prioritize the Health & Safety Exchange plan to align to the Plymouth Annual Safety Plan

Responsible to update & own Plymouth Safety Scorecard

Manage the competing priorities established by Corporate, Area and Plymouth in Safety

Ensure the Plymouth Safety plan remains the priority

Identify, lead, and facilitate safety system implementation - incident investigation, priority element support, planning and organizing with external resources, leadership team and Safety Committee

Coach the management team in their words and actions to support a strong safety culture

Hold the management team accountable to ensure safety is a line responsibility (Ensure that leadership "Walks the talk" and builds credibility with employees)

Lead the site in response to safety issues and build active, cooperative relationships with the leadership team, Safety Committee, and Union Standing Committee

Coach and support the Safety Committee and Ergonomics Committee to build cooperative relationships with the union leadership and membership

Audit safety standards and systems and prioritize follow-up by establishing action plans with Plymouth Leadership

Coach and enforce violations of safety standards with both employees and management

Align safety systems and processes across the site & area

Coach and train members of management and employees in use of safety systems and processes

Provide safety audit leadership and support for the site

Provide technical safety resources for the site

Interface with Atlantic Area and lumber technologies to assist in replication of opportunities that align to the Plymouth Safety Plan.

Develop & own safety data management systems

Ensure effective incident investigation and follow up

Develop incident investigation leadership skills with the management team and Safety Committee

Provide safety related project management support using processes like MOC, NOC & OSHA standards

Interpret applicability of OSHA standards as they apply to Plymouth

Coordinate safety on boarding for new employees

Ensure that EH&S documentation and display materials are kept current and up to date

Monitor and support required annual safety/environmental training for Plymouth employees


High School Diploma/GED with minimum 6 years related experience OR Associate’s Degree with minimum 4 years related experience OR Bachelor’s Degree with minimum 2 years related experience.

Passionate advocate for safety; demonstrate courage to care; demonstrate ability to role model safety

Demonstrated leadership ability using effective performance management skills to build organization capacity

Clear understanding of Weyerhaeuser safety systems and tools

Ability to influence a large organization

Strong, engaging, people-centered leadership style

Ability to hold members of the management team and employees (including unit manager) accountable for following safety standards and systems

Strong interpersonal and listening skills

Participate in the various aspects of leadership decision making

Initiate the actions required to get the desired results

Effective analytical, planning, prioritizing and organizing abilities

Use effective performance management skills to effectively problem solve in a team environment

Strong administrative skills as well as proficient in MS Office computer applications

Ability to communicate with others in a non-confrontational, open manner

Technical expertise in manufacturing safety

Knowledge of chemical and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) systems management

Experience in Safety Incident Investigations

High level of integrity, strong work ethic, and good judgment

The following qualifications are preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety

Knowledge of site operation processes

Safety & industrial hygiene certification and/or training
