Salary Range: $40,600 -- $50,800

A Safety/Training Officer plays an integral role in achieving the mission and goals of City of Atlanta by providing all the city’s employees with a safe and secure place to work. Specifically, the position works ensure the physical safety of employees in an assigned department/office/agency. This position may also be responsible for other duties as assigned.

This is a safety essential position during both normal, emergency and disaster circumstances. The position also has the authority to halt, suspend or terminate activities that have the clear likelihood of causing bodily injury.


A Safety/Training Officer reports to a Safety/Training Supervisor and be embedded in one or more city department(s)/office(s)/agency(s). The position does not have supervisory responsibility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned.

In his/her safety capacity:

Performs safety audits, inspections, and testing of safety equipment and devices

Conducts job site safety and hazard analysis, including performing tests on noise, ventilation, illumination, and gas release to determine compliance and sources of hazardous substances

Promotes the reduction or elimination of occupational accidents, injuries and financial losses

Ensures safe department/office/agency operations and working conditions, and compliance with applicable city safety regulations

Investigates incidents involving the assigned department/office/agency to determine incident cause and recommend solutions and reports as required;

Conduct training and safety related activities during protected emergencies and disasters

Performs related duties as required

In his/her training capacity

Develops, writes training manuals working with Specialists for specific details including training manuals, course content and visual aids

Develop and deliver training courses, classes and sessions consistent with the safety related training needs of city employees

Develop and maintain continual education support materials

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

Correct usage of English grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy

City policies, procedures, and structure; applicable local, state and federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances

National Incident Management System (NIMS)

Workplace safety regulations and standards

Oral and written communication skills

Principles of safety, environmental health, and accident prevention program administration

Fire, accident, and noise control prevention techniques, equipment, and practices

Principles of accident investigation

Ability to:

Foster an environment of collaboration among safety professionals

Apply appropriate safety regulation, standards and practices

Develop safety related policy recommendations, and procedures based on applicable policies

Function in a NIMS compliant position as assigned

Perform investigation and reconstruction of safety-related incidents

Implement safety program plans and procedures

Work independently

Develop and implement training programs

Interact professionally with various levels of management, union representatives, employees and regulatory agency personnel

Exercise judgment and creativity in making conclusions

Analyze situations, identify problems, and recommend solutions

Write proficiently and including accompanying graphics as needed

Speaker at ease in groups of varying sizes

Education and Expertise:

High school diploma or GED.

Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Risk Management, Worker's, Business/Public Administration, Education or a related field is preferred.

Three (3) years experience in Safety (System Safety, Industrial Safety and/or Loss Prevention).

Specialized training through experience or education in Safety, Safety Engineering or other related field.

Licenses and Other Requirements:

A valid GA driver’s license required.
