Position Summary:
Delivers a positive shopping experience to UTMC Gift Shop customers by providing excellent customer service. Acts as a cashier, sales associate, and replenishment associate as directed by shop management. Greets and recognizes customers, promotes teamwork with the paid and volunteer staff.

Key Responsibilities/Performance Standards (in italics):
SERVICE

Assists customers.

a. Is courteous and helpful to all customers.

b. Greets customers as they enter.

c. Prepares orders/gift wrapping/delivery as necessary for customers.

Assists gift shop volunteers.

a. Remains available when volunteers request help (needing change, assistance with customers, etc.).

EFFICIENCY AND EFFECTIVENESS

Operates cash register.

a. Follows all money handling policies concerning accurate ringing of sales using proper departments and voiding procedures.

b. Accounts for all merchandise including damaged and out-of-date perishables.

Inventory Control.

a. Informs gift shop supervisors and hospital security of suspected shoplifters.

b. Follows accurate inventory procedures, accounting for all merchandise sales, damages, vendor returns, and refunds.

Point of Sale

a. Accounts for all tenders and completes merchandise transitions accurately.

QUALITY AND SAFETY

Maintains clean gift shop.

a. Dusts and cleans merchandise and shelves.

b. Helps maintain stock levels on sales floor to ensure merchandise is available to customers.

Job Qualifications:
Qualifications:
Education:
High School diploma or GED; or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend one to five step instructions. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to present information in one-to-one situation.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Retail or cashiering experience.
  • Performs basic math skills with accuracy.
