Job Summary: Prepare local, state, and provincial sales and use tax returns; maintain tax data and files; evaluate tax-exempt orders; and provide tax support through research and resolution of intermediate tax issues to ensure tax compliance. Assist with other projects as assigned.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Prepare and remit sales and use tax returns for multiple tax jurisdictions (100 to 200+ returns monthly), analyzing accounts and reconciling them as necessary. Ensure accurate and timely payments including electronic fund transfers to avoid additional exposure/liability.
  • Maintain accurate sales tax data and files, including log of sales tax filings, and submit monthly journal entry detailing sales tax payment/accrual figures.
  • Address miscellaneous tax issues such as notices/correspondence; delinquency items; and maintaining currency with licenses, permits, and registration.
  • Research state, local, and federal sales tax rules, laws, and mandates to ensure compliance. Extract information from complex tax codes and contact government agencies as necessary to resolve problems or clarify issues.
  • Review/approve tax-exempt demonstrator orders, applying knowledge of individual state tax exemption laws and the order-entry process.
  • Responsible for the integrity of the Vertex tax program. Maintain and update Vertex rates and forms.
  • Perform other projects as assigned such as assisting in the audit process.
    Requirements:
  • Associate¬ís degree in accounting, some college coursework in accounting, or equivalent experience.
  • Understanding of accounting cycles and basic accounting principles.
  • Entry level accounting experience, preferably with exposure to sales and use taxation.
  • Proven ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) with a variety of corporate individuals and government entities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Vertex experience preferred.
