The purpose of this job is to apply knowledge of food science and engineering principles to optimize and continually improve and expand an existing platform of cereal products and processes. Another key aspect of this position is to maintain alignment with the marketing partner for this platform to drive the business goals for quality, cost and growth.


  • New Product Development
  • Work with marketing partner to identify and create conceptual new product prototypes
  • Develop and test formulas via lab, pilot-plant, and full-scale plant tests to meet product and process targets
  • Coordinate sensory, physical and chemical analyses to create product identity targets
  • Work with quality, food safety, and regulatory representatives to ensure ingredients meet internal and external safety standards
  • Create and implement ingredient and product specifications
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure final formula is properly represented on new product label
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure all needed programming and process forms are in-place for manufacturing documentation
  • Work with sensory team to create sensory production standards
  • Coordinate cross-functional communication and training for new product implementation

  • Product and Process Optimization and Improvements
  • Work with marketing partner and sensory partner to define target product quality ranges.
  • Develop objective measurement methods for each of the key quality ranges.
  • Use statistical methods, such as process capability studies, to evaluate the manufacturing process performance. Ensure capability to consistently produce within key quality range specifications.
  • Identify and reduce causes of quality variation in the manufacturing process, including process parameters, training, ingredients, and environment.
  • Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the ingredient and process technologies for all products and unit operations in the platform.
  • Work with cross functional business partners in marketing, operations and quality to develop, manage and implement a priority list of all the key projects for the product platform.
  • Assist in the development of processing parameters and finalize formulation for the scale-up of all new products for the platform.
  • Maintain control of all formulas and formulation changes for the product platform.
  • Manage shelf-life testing for all products in the platform.

  • Business Development and Profit Margin Support
  • Work with a key business partner in Marketing to maximize profitability on product platform.
  • Provide technical support to operations to continuously reduce cost of goods and improve quality.

  • Other Technical and Business Support Activities
  • Communicate project activities, information, recommendations and performance to management and appropriate MOM Brands business processes.
  • Monitor product performance and quality through product label review, competitive cuts, customer/consumer feedback, financial reports and other sources.
  • Work with appropriate resources to develop documentation and/or business processes necessary for meeting production and product goals.

    Education: MS/PhD in Food Science or BS in Chemical or Food Process Engineering.

    Experience: 5+ years of experience in the food industry in product and process development roles. Production facility experience with processes having multiple unit operations is required. Experience in process optimization, product formulation, statistical process control, process capability and quality improvements is desired. Experience in cereal, baking or snack food manufacturing is preferred.

    Skills: Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively in team-based environment with multiple functional groups. Excellent communication skills. Ability to achieve results and execute multiple simultaneous projects. Experience using statistical methods including statistical process control, process capability studies and design of experiments preferred.

    Management Skills: Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to organize and manage projects; interact, support, facilitate and lead multi-functional work teams; ability to provide work direction to assigned resources; ability to lead team to a consensus; strong negotiation skills. Ability to manage multiple projects, in a fast paced environment, meeting deadlines, and communicating status.

    Other: Able to work evenings and/or weekends. Some travel is expected (25%), but there may be extended travel on certain key start-up projects. Ability to lift 25 kg. Must have no known food allergies. Must be legally able to work in the United States.

    Work Structure: Works under the guidance of the Product Excellence Director, within the Operations & Innovation organization. Incumbent develops own work plan with limited supervision to meet project and product development objectives and deadlines. Employees may be required to supervise other technical staff.

    Responsibilities: Responsible for the maintenance and development of assigned products; manages projects to meet timelines and cost parameters that satisfy company requirements. Unacceptable performance could cause result in lower revenues, reduced profits and market share declines. Unacceptable performance could also result in adverse internal or external customer feedback, consumer dissatisfaction, and timetables that fail to meet business requirements.
