JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for supporting analytical laboratory processes including special projects, technology, methodology, laboratory proficiency measurements, research, training, and scientific processes. This position is responsible for application and evaluation of approved microbiological techniques and methodologies used in analysis of food products as they relate to accreditation, certification, and proficiency testing. This position will have contact with the laboratory client base as well as coordinate special projects.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work within the Special Projects Team to deliver high quality and timely research projects including;
  • Customer contact
  • Quoting
  • Data Analysis and presentation
  • Proposal and report writing in a scientific format
  • Required to present complex scientific information in a clear concise format understood by a variety of audiences
  • Interpret a wide variety of research methods for different food industry matrixes to develop projects for customers and internal methods
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to understand and resolve scientific issues and answer questions and gain customer confidence
  • Compile data in various analytical formats
  • Interpret data and present findings with appropriate documentation, references, and supporting material to the food industry
  • Ability to write scientific/technical proposals, reports, articles, memos and presentations
  • Maintain a high degree of technical competence by reading scientific journals, attending professional workshops, and being aware of food industry regulations, issues and trends
  • Identify critical needs for special projects requested by customers
  • Purchase supplies and monitor equipment maintenance, improving optimization by reviewing equipment, products, and processes
  • Assist in quality control duties including quality control documentation
  • Implement and monitor quality assurance
  • Support projects by working in the laboratory as needed
  • Support and improve the proficiency program
  • Support and/or manage shelf life projects as necessary
  • Supervise special projects as assigned to include training of technicians on protocols and research assignments
  • Independently pursue an assigned series of processes, procedures, or techniques in accordance with Food Safety Net Services Methods Manual, Quality Manual, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Safety Manual, and approved laboratory procedures
  • Supervise training of new and current laboratory personnel in laboratory procedures and protocols as assigned
  • Responsible for managing priorities and schedule such that individual goals as well as team goals are achieved, providing guidance, and supervision in the Principal Scientist’s absence
  • Assist with the development and implementation of laboratory services and responsiveness to customer needs, ensuring customer satisfaction while achieving desired business results of revenue and operating margins
  • Identifying and implementing process improvement procedures within Special Projects
  • Responsible for the safety of oneself and others working within their area
  • Responsible for the completion of required training
  • Travel is required and at the discretion of management . Travel will include plant visits and providing training to external customers

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May take the lead role with two or more employees in the department. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing, training, directing work, and appraising performance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters Degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Technology, or related field , or equivalent work experience
  • Two years of analytical laboratory experience ((experience in a commercial food-testing laboratory preferred)
  • Ph.D. in Food Science or Microbiology is preferred
  • Working knowledge of aseptic sampling technique, rapid and traditional microbiological methods
  • Familiarity with GMP , OSHA guidelines, FDA, BAM, APHA, and Compendium methods and procedure
  • Broad knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures of a food testing laboratory
  • Research abilities to find information to support project objectives from a variety of sources in the food science community
  • Interpersonal abilities to network with the scientific community to expand the resources of the company
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for all scientific services related to customer requests, report writing, and presentations
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Access and other databases
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

Language Skills

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of LIMS and Microsoft Office Products software.
