The tumor immunology group is responsible for establishing and validating novel tools and assays for the design and study of novel cancer vaccine and immunotherapeutic targets. The team seeks to (i) promote functional anti-tumor immune responses via state-of-the-art vaccination strategies, and (ii) harness new insights into immune control of oncogenic microenvironments

The Scientist, Tumor Immunology is a highly motivated, interactive, and creative individual that will join a diverse team of researchers in a fast paced and science-driven environment with the goal to develop novel vaccines for the treatment of cancer. The candidate is to work within the Tumor Immunology group, will have an interest in cancer immunotherapy, and is expected to contribute to forming the strategy towards new target validation, immunoassay development, and mechanism of action elucidation activities. Key responsibilities include the execution of scientific plans, interpretation of experimental results, and providing support to vaccine projects. This position requires a strong cellular and molecular immunology background to design and generate experimental vaccines, evaluate their immunogenicity in mice, and determine the mechanisms by which vaccines impact on the balance between cancer cells and the host immune response. The candidate will have broad prior methodological and technical experience to include T cell-based culture assays, cytokine ELISpots, multi-color FACS analysis, and ELISA. Previous experience with adenovirus vector construction will be considered a plus. Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills are essential and the capability to effectively work in a team environment is required. The ability to initiate and coordinate both internal and external scientific collaborations is expected. Individuals with a strong publication record, and/or equivalent industry experience will be preferred.


A Ph.D. or Ph.D./M.D. with solid immunology and molecular biology technical skills and 1-3 years of productive research experience level in an academic, pharmaceutical or biotechnology drug/vaccine discovery environment is required. Up-to-date expertise of the innate and adaptive immune systems is required. Tumor immunobiology experience is a plus. Demonstrated record of research experience in cellular immunology, including publications is required. Extensive hands-on expertise with aseptic techniques, including the isolation and culture of primary immune cells from murine tissues is required. Experience with human tissues and the maintenance of mammalian cell lines is desired. Prior cell-based, immunological, and biochemical assay development experience with a variety of readout technologies including ELISpots, flow cytometry, and ELISA is desired. Experience with a broad range of contemporary technologies used in cellular and molecular biology is required. Extensive experience in cell transfection/transduction is required. Experience with the generation and characterization of recombinant adenovirus is a plus. Outstanding experiment design, problem-solving, and data analysis skills is required. Excellent communication, presentation, collaboration, and organizational skills are required. This position is based in La Jolla, CA.
