The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC), a Commonwealth of Virginia Independent Agency which provides legal representation to indigent criminal defendants though the administration of a state public defender system and the certification of court appointed counsel, is now accepting applications for the position of Secretary I for the Fairfax Public Defenders Office. The qualified candidate will provide administrative and clerical support for attorneys, investigators and sentencing advocates in the Public Defenders office. The Secretary position reports to the Public Defender of the Fairfax Office and is employed at will. The successful candidate will be subject to fingerprint based criminal background checks.

Duties for the position include greeting persons entering the Public Defender Office as well as operating a multiline telephone to answer, screen and forward calls, providing information to callers, taking messages and scheduling appointments. Additional qualifications include typing a variety of documents to include but not limited to memos, letters and various types of legal documents, maintaining a filing and record keeping system, collect, sort, distribute, and prepare mail and communicating and interacting with the public defender office colleagues, clients and judicial system personnel.

Minimum Qualifications
The position requires a working knowledge of office practices and procedures as well as creating and editing, letters, memos and legal documents. Experience in use of computer software to include word processing, spreadsheet and database applications are needed along with creating and managing an electronic and manual filing system, and skills in keyboarding. The qualified candidate will have experience using Microsoft applications to include, Word and Excel. The qualified candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and work independently and dependently in a fast paced, team driven environment. Prior experience providing administrative and clerical support in a criminal justice and/or legal environment is required.

Preferred Qualifications
Fluent Spanish language skills are preferred.
