The Security Department is looking to hire an occasional/on-call Security Officer. The Security Officer is responsible for, under general supervision, ensuring the security of patients, staff, volunteers, and visitors and the protection of the Hospital, grounds and property, by patrolling on foot and in automobile, and enforcing Hospital and Security policies and procedures. Investigates potential or actual security incidents and maintains required documentation. May assist in orienting new Security Officers. May function as "charge officer" on an assigned shift. Once commissioned, functions as a Special Police Officer on Sheppard Pratt Health System (SPHS) property bearing the authority and responsibility of police powers charged with the protection and preservation of good order and peace on SPHS property.

Work requires the ability to read, write, speak English, and perform arithmetic calculations well enough in order to prepare reports, keep records, and deal effectively with other people. Work requires substantial interpersonal skills sufficient to work with a wide range of patients, staff and visitors under difficult circumstances and present a model of warmth, empathy, patience and control while frequently rendering both routine and emergency assistance and exchanging information on factual matters. Work requires a continuously high level of alertness, in order to react promptly and effectively to emergencies, and visual acuity, in order to detect suspicious activities with frequent exposure to mental strain while working with a widely varied patient population, staff and the general public under highly demanding circumstances. Work requires considerable standing, walking, pushing (e.g., disabled vehicles), and restraining persons. Requires mid-range vision, depth perception, and field of vision. Frequent exposure to extreme temperatures and/or aggressive persons and/or hazardous situations.

This position is not eligible for benefits since it is an occasional/on-call position. This hired individual must be available and make the commitment to work a minimum of 48 hours per month, subject to the SPHS Security Department's needs for per diem staff coverage. Hours are not guaranteed and are scheduled based on Health System needs. Required per diem work expectations are: Six (6) 8-hr shifts per month; four (4) 12-hr shifts per month; or any combination of the two totaling at least 48 hours per month. Two weekend shifts per month and two holiday shifts per year are also required. The hired individual must be able to work day (7am-3pm), evening (3pm-11pm), night shifts (11pm-7am) (weekday/wknd) as needed. High school diploma and six to twelve months proven security experience required – experience in a health care related environment strongly preferred. Must be able to qualify for a commission by the State of Maryland as a Special Police Officer in order to make arrests, initiate emergency petitions, and perform other responsibilities and duties. Must possess a valid driver's license in order to operate a Hospital vehicle at the time of appointment and continuously meet the standards of the SPHS Driver’s Licensing Policy throughout tenure in the position. The hired individual will be required to attend a day and a half of orientation training in Towson (Monday 8am -4:30pm and Tuesday 8am -10am).
