Supervises department personnel. Orders merchandise. Ensures customer service and product quality, freshness and selection.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains and encourages an atmosphere of fast, friendly, courteous customer service. Handles customer relations. Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques. Oversees and assists service deli clerks with all duties.
Satisfies departmental projected sales, gross margin and cost objectives. Creates effective promotional and seasonal displays. Prevents shrink and controls expenses.
Orders, checks, receives and controls inventory to ensure adequate product quantity, quality and freshness, and prevents the sale of out-dated products. Takes periodic inventories of all deli items, computes gross profit, processes administrative paperwork, and maintains accurate department records. Prepares and cooks food items. Communicates in-store advertisements over the intercom.
Supervises, motivates, trains and participates in the hiring of Service Deli Department personnel. Monitors employee performance and recommends personnel action such as hiring, firing, layoff and disciplinary action. Schedules personnel to ensure adequate coverage and service level.
Responsible for cost and quality control and maintaining a safe and secure work environment. Responsible for ensuring the clean and proper appearance of the department and equipment.
Responsible for performing all job duties and responsibilities with honesty and integrity.

SKILLS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Requires strong communication skills, good leadership and interpersonal skills, the proven ability to manage people, and the ability to maintain composure in dealing with customers and co-workers.
Requires knowledge of interviewing techniques, and the analytical ability to handle administrative details such as planning orders, sales projections, scheduling, supervising and making hiring decisions.
Requires a good understanding of overall company practices and Service Deli Department policies and procedures. Requires the ability to judge and react to business activity.
Requires previous experience as a Service Deli Clerk or Assistant Service Deli Manager.
Ability to frequently reach, lift, and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 55 lbs. Ability to frequently do repetitious arm movements necessary for slicing, cutting and preparing various deli products.
Ability to stand for long periods of time, walk and move rapidly, bend, stoop, twist and turn frequently. Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination are necessary. Must be able to operate kitchen utensils and equipment.
Mental alertness is necessary to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities. Requires knowledge of basic math, and weights and measures. Must have knowledge of taste, content, and perishability of products, safety and sanitation procedures, and department policies and procedures.
Exposure to potential hazards exists with respect to cooking procedures, equipment, and work aides necessary to perform job duties. Exposure to approximately 150 F while handling products in hot cases, 35 F while handling products in cold cases, 28 F while handling products in cooler and -20 F while handling products in freezer. Working conditions consist of a temperature controlled store environment.
