DESCRIPTION

The Senior Accountant works in the finance and accounting department of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) focusing on processes and internal controls, core accounting functions, budgeting, and financial reporting. S/he plays a key role in performing day-to-day accounting operations, including month end close and financial reporting to ensure compliance to LIRS policies and procedures, timeliness, and fair presentation of financial data. In collaboration with other finance staff, s/he recommends improvements to processes to best incorporate suitable controls to ensure the integrity of the financial information, to ensure timely and complete accurate program reports, to ensure meaningful presentations of financial data to end-users, and to ensure timely response to requests for ad hoc financial information. S/he plays the main role in documenting the financing department's internal controls and processes.

DUTIES

Responsible for maintaining clear and effective financial internal control documentation for the organization. These processes include Accounts Payable, Cash/Accounts Receivable, cost / time allocation processes, financial reporting, month end close, monthly reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts and select income Ensures the optimal use of technology by becoming an expert in the accounting system, MIP/SAGE. Participates in the implementation of FTE / allocation systems used as part of month end processes. Organizes training for all appropriate staff on optimal use of all systems and software used by the Finance staff. Communicates with software vendors relative to issues, training needs, and updates. Ensures internal controls guarantee the approved LIRS budget and award budgets are reflected in MIP / SAGE and maintained correctly throughout the year.Ability to perform or review all LIRS accounting functions, including receipts, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, documentation, journal entries, inventory, general ledger analysis, investment tracking, designated fund tracking, bank reconciliations, allocations, indirect rate calculations etc.Coordinates LIRS staff in preparing for the annual audit, 990 tax filings and coordinates with independent auditors.Participates in the preparation of all internal and external financial statements, budget to actual reports and financial reports for donors. Ensures internal financial reports are meaningful, concise, timely, useful and consistent.Partners with the Director of Finance and Accounting and others in the development, analysis, and interpretation of statistical and accounting information in order to appraise operating results of LIRS, programs, and LIRS affiliates / partners. Researches ad-hoc financial items and carries out additional duties as assigned by the Director of Finance and Accounting and/or VP of F&A.Other job related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Commitment to LIRS's core mission and values and an ability to model those values in relationship with colleagues and partners.Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required. Two (2) or more years in public accounting with experience in government and/or non-profit accounting required. CPA or in process of obtaining CPA preferred.Knowledge of US government grant-making rules and regulations required.Demonstrated problem-solving skills, with evidence of good judgment. Demonstrated ability to proactively recommend options to resolve issues to achieve goals; desire to serve and support others. Ability to anticipate priorities and organize work to be responsive to the deliverables required of the team. Highly knowledgeable in internal controls and process flow. Proficient in using general ledger and non-profit accounting systems, e-mail and web browser software. Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills that present complex financial information in an accessible way for non-financial people, as illustrated through narratives, PowerPoint's, graphs, and spreadsheets; demonstrated ability to communicate options for process improvements that align with the goals of the organization. Excellent Excel skills required; solid Access and Visio skills preferred. Ability to interpret accounting issues and analyze impact of accounting options on LIRS; willingness to learn, hear, and give honest feedback in a way that is sensitive to the needs of others.Demonstrated collaborative skills in a multi-cultural context. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with people of varied backgrounds in a collaborative team environment.Appreciation and respect for Lutheran beliefs and values, church member motivations and sensitivities.Ability to travel within the United States approximately 5% of the time is preferred.
