The Process Solutions Technology Development Center is one of Cargill's corporate research groups based in Minneapolis, MN. This is a fast-paced, growing area within Cargill, and impacts the full range of Cargill's operations - from grain and oilseed processing to renewable polymers and novel food ingredients. Our scope includes projects from conception through process definition and plant start up to optimization of operating facilities for both Cargill and our customers. We have a diverse range of talents in the Engineering Numerical Analysis space with expertise in process simulation, control and data visualization, optimization, computational fluid dynamics, statistics, numerical methods, and more.
Due to a significant increase in demand for the services of our team, we are looking for additional highly skilled engineers who are enthusiastic about tackling non-traditional simulation, control and data analysis projects. This posting targets individuals with a proven track record of accomplishments in an academic or industrial setting in this space, who are willing to work in a collaborative environment where each project is an opportunity to enhance or develop our toolset. We encourage candidates who have used computationally intensive, engineering focused skills to solve practical problems to apply.
As a senior engineer you will take an active role in the highly respected Engineering Numerical Analysis team, based in Minneapolis, USA. In particular, we are looking to grow the Computational Fluid Dynamics capability within our team, so we are seeking candidates with CFD experience. The ideal candidate has good collaboration skills, broad conceptual strength, and is eager to shape the use of CFD in food and ag processes. The ideal candidate is also self-motivated, creative, and able to develop new approaches that address the unique and complex problems that we encounter. Due to our project mix, you will work on a variety of projects, some which require CFD and some which would require other forms of modeling. In any project, you will be challenged to combine fundamental chemical engineering principles and applied mathematics with economic evaluation, uncertainty analysis, and business development. Specific job responsibilities will vary with project assignments but will typically include:
45% - Improving the sustainability of existing manufacturing processes: You will have the opportunity to impact business economic and environmental bottom line by improving plant performance in areas such as yield, capacity, resource utilization, and environmental footprint. you will expose to the full range of unit operations that Cargill and our customer operate - from continuous chromatography to liquid-liquid extraction, from biocatalysis to polymerization, from reactive crystallization to three-phase condensation.
45% - Designing new industrial scale processes: you will have the opportunity to participate in multi-disciplinary teams and provide process development for new unit operations, integrated processes and innovative products and services. you will be involved with different business units and functions within Carill and be exposed to the breadth of Cargill offerings, including new food and feed ingredients, biobased industrial materials and customer solutions.
10% - Developing new tools and capabilities: The majority of our modeling toolset is developed in-house. You will be able to utilize and combine numerical, computational, and engineering skills to improve our existing tools and build new ones to our growing suite.
PhD in Chemical Engineering or related field OR Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or related field with 3+ years industry experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or related field with 5+ years industry experience
Previous experience/education with conceptual design and/or optimization of chemical manufacturing processes
Previous experience in computational fluid dynamics
Broad understanding of process equipment and component physical properties
Demonstrated facility with applied computing (e.g. Chemical Engineering simulation packages or programming languages such as Fortran, Visual Basic or C)
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work effectively in a diverse team and communicate with both technical and non-technical people
Willing to travel up to 15%
PhD in Chemical Engineering with 3+ years industry experience
Project experience based on Process Simulation, Process Control, or Applied Statistics
Advanced knowledge and experience in computational fluid dynamics
Experience in process development, design and engineering
Experience in optimization
Experience with fermentation/biochemistry/reaction chemistry
Experience with thermodynamics and the development of physical properties correlations
Experience supporting multidisciplinary teams
Knowledge of intellectual property and issues around freedom to operation decisions
Demonstrated initiative and business/porject management skills
Exposure to manufacturing processes, particularly in the agrifood environment
Fluency in a second language
