Etsy is seeking a Senior Copywriter to build out our copywriting and editing practice. You’ll use your ace command of language and creative wits to amplify the story of Etsy — the company, the marketplace and the movement. Your mission? Help us reimagine commerce. This is a full-time position based in Brooklyn, NY and reporting to the Communications Director. You’ll work very closely with our Design Studio on web, print, mobile and email projects.
About the Job
The Senior Copywriter is a practitioner-manager. You’ll keep your chops up writing and editing diverse kinds of communications, and you’ll grow and lead the copy team. Your “clients” — we call them colleagues — run the gamut from marketers to community support to product developers.
Your responsibilities include:
Managing the calendar of copy requests and deadlines
Developing creative campaigns with art directors, designers and marketing managers
Crafting copy for interfaces, emails, advertising and brand communications
Recruiting and directing additional copywriters
Maintaining Etsy’s style and voice guides
Working closely with regional counterparts in Europe, Canada, Australia and Japan for consistent campaigns and messaging
The right person for this job takes initiative and is self-directed, but is also great at collaborating. Your writing must demonstrate economy and wit. We’ll be able to recognize your instinctive feel for Etsy’s brand values, and your passion for spreading the word about our creative community.
You will be successful in this role if you:
Have at least 6 years of experience in agency or corporate communications and 2 years in managing people
Can thrive and create your own structure in a fluid work environment
Have worked across multiple channels and on consumer web products (blech, jargon)
Are a pro at project management
Are sophisticated at translating broad creative ideas into tight concepts and executions
Maintain snobbish discriminating standards and yet regularly laugh at the copy you write
Are empathetic with your readers and colleagues
Are wary of ubiquitous commerce-speak
Treat exclamation points like Sriracha salt!
Bonus points if you:
Have worked in a commerce environment
Have started your own microenterprise
Are familiar with Basecamp

Our offices are like this http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2010/09/the-office-matters.html and this http://www.officesnapshots.com/2010/10/11/etsy-offices/ . We're empowered and expected to be ourselves, share our ideas and figure out what we can each do to keep Etsy evolving. We have full company-paid benefits, including family and domestic partner benefits, humane working hours, couches, quiet spaces, lunch twice a week and handmade desks.
We're growing rapidly and are well-funded with a proven business model and established revenue to help us continue serving our community.
If you're interested in joining the team, please send us your resume and portfolio or writing samples. You won’t be surprised to hear, though, that we won’t consider them without a cover letter — this is a writing position, after all. As you’ve probably guessed, Etsy is a place that values individuality and variety. So use your judgment and write to us in your own voice. If you practice a craft (besides writing), curate a blog, or have an interesting side project, we’d love to hear about it.
Etsy is a marketplace, but it's also a community made up of many different individuals with many different lives and points of view.
