This position provides strategic legal advice to management on a broad range of higher value litigation matters. Working with our clients, the Senior Counsel, Litigation aims to proactively identify and reduce legal exposure and litigation costs. This position is expected to develop practical and legally sound solutions that support PetSmart's business and financial objectives. You will need to be able to work with a high degree of independence as you will be considered a primary resource for legal expertise within and outside of the Legal Department.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Reports to Vice President & Associate General Counsel, Business Operations
• Supervises two paralegals
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Serves as the primary legal liaison for major litigation, including major class action, commercial, general liability, real estate, patent infringement, and other cases.
• Responsible for the overall management, selection, strategy, direction and critical decisions made in connection with major litigation matters, including the retention of and direction given to outside counsel and experts.
•Analyzes and evaluates legal exposure in major litigation, advises clients regarding settlement and major case decisions, and prepares and delivers summary reports to clients and Senior Team members.
•Translates complex information and data into practical information and recommendations.
•Demonstrates solutions orientation, strong collaboration, and teamwork; inspires clients' confidence.
• Manage outside counsel legal fees on major litigation matters; also manages settlement budget and is responsible for providing systemic transparency to business partners for litigation costs and settlements.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
• Acts as the single point of contact for PetSmart, Inc. in major litigation matters.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Juris Doctor from an accredited law school required. Licensed member of the bar, in good standing, in one or more jurisdictions required. Minimum of 8 years related and relevant experience required, including class action and commercial litigation experience. Some in-house experience helpful. Previous experience providing leadership and mentoring for a staff of legal professionals and support personnel is required. Demonstrated organizational and project management experience in addition to excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills required.
