The College Board, the national educational organization, is conducting a search for a Senior Director of Math Assessment Development who will direct the assessment design and development functions for new College Board assessment products in Mathematics. This position reports to an executive director and can be resident in one of our College Board offices with primary locations being New York City and Newtown, PA.


The Senior Director, Assessment Development will work with other Assessment Development staff to ensure that all assessment development functions in Mathematics are in sync with the spirit of the assessment frameworks.

The Senior Director serves as the primary advisor on the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics to program heads, standards and curriculum alignment services, and external vendors involved in the design and development process; anticipates corporate needs within the content area of Mathematics and maximizes the effective contribution of Assessment Development and Design to the organization, integrating critical information from such diverse sources as vendors, College Board Research, outside experts, and College Board Program Directors.

The Senior Director provides Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and related assessment expertise to all parts of the organization, integrating knowledge of the standards, curriculum, instruction, test design, and test development; initiates projects, such as research studies, as needed by programs; and keeps current in developments in the content areas and in the fields of assessment and curriculum.


Manage and direct the design of new assessments and supporting products, including the formulation of test and item development principles, item and test specifications, item writer procedures and guidelines, item templates, and prototype items.

Work with Assessment Development staff, Research staff, and Program staff to ensure that all assessments and supporting products and services are developed in sync with the test design.

Assist and advise in the recruitment, orientation, and training of new test development review committee members and product development committee members, utilizing contacts in professional organizations and in the content field to do so.

Serve as primary contact for all internal and external expertise in the specific areas of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics, particularly as it relates to test design and development. Give presentations at College Board Forums and at professional association conferences on College Board products and services. Represent the organization on panels and committees external to the organization with respect to the content area. Maintain contacts among leaders in content field and professional organizations.

Communicate regularly to internal clients such as programs and senior management about their needs and assist them in planning and forecasting.

Provide expertise in the Common Core State Standards to internal and external clients.

Work with Research to plan and prepare policy reports regarding student college and career readiness in the area of Mathematics.

Review internal and external communications related to the content areas of expertise.

Mentor a team of senior and associate content specialists in the specific content areas.


PhD or the equivalent education is greatly preferred; a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in Mathematics content areas is required.

Experience must include a minimum of 7 years of experience in K-13 test design and development with a nationally recognized testing organization or state testing program and in-depth knowledge and experience with the Common Core State Standards and other state and national curriculum standards required. Teaching experience at the middle, secondary, or post-secondary levels preferred.

Requirements also include in-depth knowledge and experience in appropriate content areas, preferably as a test designer and developer; thorough knowledge and experience with standards development and alignment; and prior management experience required.
