The Senior Director of Strategy & Franchise Operations (S&FO) has overall responsibility for leading the GBF Neurodegenerative Diseases (NDD) Franchise Strategy, the performance and planning processes and other operational activities for the NDD Business Franchise. The Director will ready the NDD GBF for change in the market by anticipating change and identifying key breakthrough opportunities ensuring that the NDD GBF develops a strategy and accompanying operations and associated tactics that proactively prepare for a competitive response to a dynamic market.
Main responsibilities include:
Lead the development of the mid to long-term franchise strategy (Multiple Sclerosis & Immunology), presentations and documents for GBF Neurodegenerative Diseases. This includes improving awareness and understanding of global NDD market trends that impact the strategy and identification of what needs to be done differently inside the GBF to prepare to respond to these trends.
Collaborate closely with other NDD GBF departments (Multiple Sclerosis Strategic Marketing, New Product Planning, New Franchises / Immunologyalong with the Regional Franchise Leaders) and functions outside the GBF to ensure the GBF goals and strategies are realized, including new drugs being developed internally as well as the successful selection and screening process of potential business development and licensing targets.
Lead the NDD GBF's operational activities, including annual budget prioritization and monitoring, business performance processes, development and validation of business cases for new life-cycle management opportunities in Multiple Sclerosis and in new franchises
Drive the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) related activities, fostering an environment that promotes “NDD as the place to be” and drives the imperatives of the function: Passion for Growth, Relentless Innovation, Breakthrough Performance, Customer Oneness.
Drive implementation of new governance and processes in the GBF, including the definition and clarification of roles & responsibilities, the establishment of business rules on new processes and the definition of key performance indicators (i.e., key metrics of performance and profitability, sales, sales growth, market share, Operational ratios, as well as develop and define metrics that are necessary to track the franchise success)
Contribute to development and validation of business cases of new life-cycle management opportunities for NDD and New Franchises (i.e., the “Multiple Sclerosis franchise”, including Rebif and New Products in the MS franchise and “Immunology”, which evaluates the development of other therapy areas, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, ALS, CI, though the new franchises)
Develop / review analysis, presentations and reports to communicate performance, findings and recommendations to the GBF head and the company’s senior management team
Ensure that business partners from Business Intelligence, Forecasting, Market Access, Health Economics, and controlling fully understand the NDD strategy and pro-actively anticipate our needs and that the information provided by these functions to address these needs is of good quality, up to date and relevant.
Drive the BRMs (business review meetings), focusing on tactic implementation, corresponding budget spending and tactic’s performance indicators
Be the voice of the GBF in interactions with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure alignment in corporate processes (i.e., Merck Group corporate processes, such as Risk Reporting, Strategic Planning Process, target setting and performance appraisal; and Merck Serono processes that go beyond the GBF, such as Portfolio Review process, Global Brand Plan and GBF Strategy, which requires alignment with Research & Development, Portfolio development, Regions/ countries)
Senior Leadership Team (SLT)
Drive SLT related activities by working closely with the Head of the GBF and as such being aware and aligned with the leader’s intent. These activities will include: ensuring smooth and efficient SLT and OLT – Operational SLT - meetings and off-site retreats, ad hoc SLT meetings to respond to requests from top management, and ongoing monitoring and tracking of every SLT related activity. By partnering with the Head of the GBF to ensure clear communication of strategies, tactics, plans and measures, shape an environment that promotes “NDD as the place to be” and drives the imperatives of the function: Passion for Growth, Relentless Innovation, Breakthrough Performance, Customer Oneness
By providing clarity on strategy and tactics as well as assisting with open communication between the GBF Head and the team, foster a candid, open environment that aligns communication among the SLT and to Key Stakeholders with “One Voice”
Identify opportunities and flag issues that impact the GBF and the Global Operations organization’s success
Engage with the global network and be part of the larger organization (i.e., Global Operations, other GBFs, Commercial Excellence and the Regions, Research & Development, Portfolio Development, Technical Operations, and all necessary and essential partners, including functions at the level of the Merck Group beyond Pharma, (i.e. for Risk Reporting, Strategic Planning Process or Business Review Meetings with the GL)
Nurture the GBF’s existing and emerging leaders by building alignment (affinity, ownership and interdependence)
Own the strategy development process / lead the development of the global franchise strategy, and Life Cycle Management (LCM) strategies.
Lead the long-term planning process for the GBF, including the development of the 10 year long-term strategy & forecast and mid-term plan for the business franchise, working together with strategic marketing, controlling and the regional franchise heads to ensure overall coordination and alignment with corporate processes and the regional commercial units
Lead the development of strategy documents and presentations to EMD Serono’s/Merck KGaA Senior Management and other stakeholders
Interact with Global Business Intelligence, Forecasting, Commercial, Medical & Scientific Affairs, Strategic Marketing, Communications, Finance, Legal in the evaluation and analysis of industry trends to ensure understanding of how these trends may evolve and use this understanding in the design of the GBF strategy
Direct the establishment of new processes that make GBF NDD a more strategy oriented organization (be an “Internal Consultant” with broad exposure across organization)
Implement & direct a strategy process that engages the key internal stakeholders in strategy development and implementation
Together with the SLT, ensure that strategies are compelling, comprehensive and actionable and tactics are designed and implemented in alignment with plans that drive success
Establish key milestones and performance indicators of strategy implementation to ensure delivery of successful results
Work closely with other NDD functions, controlling, BD and external consultants/experts to ensure BD&L alignment to NDD franchise strategy and review/validate valuations & business cases of potential in / out-licensing targets
Align the GBF’s functional teams and the NDD business partners with the GBF’s goals and strategies and ensure coordination and resourcing (including budgets)
Drive the GBF's business performance processes on a monthly basis, including the monitoring and analyses of:
Sales and OPEX evolution
Performance and profitability
Market share evolution
Drive the GBF's annual budget planning process:
Lead the process for the design of the tactics (programs) conducted within the GBF, ensuring alignment with the Strategies Goals & Vision of the Franchise
Review and define budget proposed by the GBF functions
Acts as an expert on strategy, an internal consultant and as a project leader on cross-functional strategy/innovation initiatives aimed at making the GBF organization more effective, designing and implementing projects and strategic activities as required, and coordinating project activities across multiple stakeholders including senior management sponsors
EDUCATION LEVEL AND LANGUAGES REQUIRED
BA/BS preferably in Finance, Economics, Engineering or Business Administration (with strong finance background),
MBA a plus
English proficiency mandatory (native speaker or study/work experience in English speaking country preferably); French and German are an asset
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, QUALIFICATONS AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum 8 years experience in a business performance, investment banking or management consultancy position, with emphasis on strategy development & implementation and financial analysis & valuations in the pharmaceutical business / biotech industry
Very strong analytical skills, as well as solid written and verbal skills
Experience in working in cross-functional and cross-cultural environments
Effective communication and interaction on all management levels
Advanced computer skills - excellent knowledge and experience with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access. Facility with learning new technologies as they come on line. Mastery in use of MS Project or similar project management information systems a plus
Marketing and sales background is an asset
Experience in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical or consumer health products company a strong plus
Proven track record in Sales/Marketing planning, organization and administration as well as process improvement a plus
Experience with sales data reporting/analysis
Experience operating in a global environment
Knowledge of medical, regulatory, clinical, concepts strongly preferred
