Summary: The candidate will lead multiple internal and external research programs in the Chemistry Department at Celgene’s San Diego research facility. The candidate will have outstanding leadership and team management skills, with a demonstrated ability to coordinate and direct the efforts of multiple staff incorporating various scientific skills and disciplines. This position will report to the VP of Chemistry and manage the Chemistry Management Team (CMT) in San Diego. The successful candidate will work directly with the Project Teams and Early Dev’t Teams, therapeutic area leadership, other research disciplines, and CROs.Qualifications: PhD in chemistry with >15 years of relevant drug discovery experience, much of that at the director level.Widely recognized as an intellectual leader in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery with an extensive record of patents and publications.Demonstrated track record of delivering multiple candidates into development.Significant project leadership experience.Demonstrated ability to implement project and chemistry strategies.In-depth knowledge of multiple therapeutic areas.Experience in both Discovery and ED stages of drug discovery.Extensive working knowledge of modern medicinal chemistry and drug discovery techniques (FBDD, SBDD, multi-attribute analysis, flexible resourcing models, alternative delivery systems, etc.).Experience the concepts and methods of parallel synthesis.Experience managing scientific collaborations and contracted research.Effective team building and teamwork skills.Responsibilities: Build an innovative chemistry team that is a reliable source of high-quality development candidates.Manage all chemistry activities, personnel, and operations in San Diego, including associated CROs.Accountable for project strategies, timelines, and deliverables.Interact effectively with partners in computational chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, DMPK, toxicology, and early development.Supervise and direct the efforts of all chemistry staff, providing guidance, instruction, and coaching.Represent chemistry across and beyond Discovery.Build a dynamic scientific and professional culture focused on productivity and innovation that reflects Celgene values.Manage to budget.Skills: Expert in medicinal chemistry – both drug design and organic synthesis.Able to integrate heterogeneous and ambiguous datastreams and formulate coherent paths forward.Excellent written and oral communication skills.Facilitates the growth of less experienced scientists.Effective spokesperson for medicinal chemistry across the Celgene organization.Broad understanding of drug discovery & development and the R&D process.Familiar with industry trends and competitors position.Other Attributes: Develop new, innovative approaches to project leadership and management.Allocate resources that affect the department.Collaborate with VP in developing goals for chemistry in San Diego.Build constructive relationships across the Celgene organization to achieve the goals of Chemistry and the business.Represent Celgene Research to the external scientific community through conferences, lectures, and publications.Optional experience in non-small molecule (biologics) drug discovery.Requirements & Education: PhD in organic or medicinal chemistry with >15 years of relevant biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience.

Candidate must have demonstrated the delivery of multiple compounds into clinical development.
