The Senior Director of Advancement is charged with providing operational leadership to the Office of Advancement including oversight of alumni relations, annual fund, advancement services, constituent services, individual giving and overall department operations and processes.
The Senior Director of Advancement will work with the Vice President for Advancement in formulating strategic direction, external relations and financial oversight for the department. This individual is an experienced development professional with a strategic mindset.
Assists the Vice President of Advancement in managing, and has daily operational oversight for, the Office of Advancement.
Assists the Vice President of Advancement in communicating the mission, purpose and vision of HBU to existing and new constituencies.
Manages a portfolio of donors and prospects.
Completes all reports on field donor activities and expenses incurred in a timely and comprehensive manner.
Directly supervises the Advancement Officer for Individual Giving, Director of Foundations and Corporate Relations/Church and Community Relations, Director of Alumni Relations and Advancement.
Assists Vice President for Advancement in leading full Advancement team meetings.
Assists Vice President for Advancement in developing donor cultivation, solicitation, stewardship processes, and planned giving.
Builds relationships and handles issue resolution with other HBU departments and assists in creating development strategies to meet designated goals.
Supervises and analizes a stewardship plan that encompasses events, systems and activities (e.g. newsletters, donor acknowledgment letters, special events, ES/EAS.)
Manages donor recognition opportunities.
Evaluates constituent service programs to determine:
Their effectiveness as a mode of outreach within a constituent group;
Needs related to specialized communication and staffing;
Strategies to enhance their engagement and leveraging them to support HBU; and
Strategies for identifying major gift prospects from the group.
Oversees all activities related to Advancement events. Ensures all donor events further the mission and vision of HBU and are evaluated in a timely manner. Analyzes and interprets event evaluation data to recommend changes, where appropriate:
The net income of each event (particularly, as a percentage of funds raised)
The amount of staff time and other indirect costs that the event incurs; and
The importance of the event as a friend-raising, fund-raising, profile-building or stewardship opportunity.
Attends appropriate stewardship and recognition events and coordinates feedback from staff and volunteers on contacts made.
Works directly with the Director of Alumni Relations and Advancement to oversee all aspects of HBU’s alumni relations, including planning, organizing and evaluating the alumni relations program as well as implementation of all alumni events.
Insures that the Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations builds and sustains relationships with alumni through programs, communications and volunteer opportunities.
Integrates alumni relations within advancement initiatives to achieve departmental objectives.
Assists the Vice President for Advancement and Advancement Officers in developing solicitation strategies for alumni.
Identifies opportunities for engaging alumni and communicates all alumni prospects to advancement officers.
Routinely identifies and qualifies alumni prospects for gifts.
Participates in developing strategies for all alumni events including Homecoming, class reunions, Graduation Cookout and alumni networking events.
Provides leadership and direction to the Alumni Board of Directors, working with the Assistant Director, and Associate Director of alumni relations/annual fund in arranging and attending its meetings, staffing its committees and ensuring strong and productive relationships between Board members and the academic and administrative leadership.
Supervises the maintenance and tracking of up-to-date information for alumni files.
Supervises the production of the alumni e-newsletter, determining the content, overseeing the writing of articles and the layout and ensuring deadlines are met.
Has limited data entry in Banner (primarily used to generate personal call reports.)
Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Advancement.
Five to seven years of advancement experience.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field, preferred.
Personable presence, demeanor and desire to work face-to-face with donor prospects and advisors. Able to work with various levels of donors and executives both externally and internally.
Strong leadership skills, with the ability to lead by example in a Christian environment.
Knowledge of Banner, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Organized, energetic, flexible, detail-oriented, and strategic approach to problem solving.
Initiates and has ability to work independently.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work. This may involve some lifting, carrying, moving, pushing and/or pulling of objects/materials of light weight (15-20 pounds.)
Works occasional irregular hours, including some nights and weekends.
Local and regional travel is expected.
Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
