POSITION OVERVIEW: The Senior Director of Advancement (SDA) will ensure KIPP Austin’s fiscal health by developing and implementing a strategic fundraising plan. In doing so, the SDA is responsible for creating and implementing short and long term action plans to solicit major individual, corporate, and foundation gifts. As leader of the advancement team, the SDA will oversee significant donor relationships, the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gifts, and fundraising events. In addition, the SDA will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer in the annual budgeting process as well as in long-term financial planning. Finally, the SDA’s team will lead on communications and marketing duties, which include cultivating KIPP Austin’s brand identity and leveraging KIPP Austin’s presence in the community. The SDA will serve as a member of KIPP Austin’s senior leadership team and work closely with the Board of Directors. This role reports directly to the CEO and serves as the manager for 2-4 direct reports including a Grants and Communications Manager, an Annual Giving Manager, a Development Associate, and related capital campaign staff.


1. Create and implement a strategic fundraising and outreach strategy

a. Work with staff and the board to develop a long-term fundraising strategy for the organization

b. Develop short and long term action plans aligned to the long-term fundraising strategy

c. Manage the implementation of the fundraising strategy


Lead communication efforts including coordinating with the press and other external stakeholders including the KIPP Foundation e. Lead a board committee and present accurate coordinated reports and board meetings

2. Oversee the development and execution of a capital campaign

a. Work with the board and external consultants to conduct a feasibility study for upcoming capital campaign

b. Drive capital campaign planning, including setting financial targets, developing appropriate timelines, and securing necessary resources

c. Manage the implementation of a successful capital campaign

3. Cultivate critical relationships with KIPP donors

a. Cultivate relationships with potential KIPP donors

b. Maintain relationships with current KIPP donors by keeping them informed about KIPP Austin news and by being accessible to answer any questions that donors may have regarding KIPP Austin

c. Serve as the “external face” of KIPP Austin at events

d. Work with the Finance Team and Chief Operating Officer to write accurate grant reports

4. Apply for corporate, foundation, and government grants

a. Develop an understanding of each KIPP school’s culture and personality to connect donors’ missions to specific school initiatives and school programs

b. Collaborate with the Advancement Team to write effective corporate and foundation grant proposals

c. Submit grant reports in a timely manner according to specific guidelines set by the donor organization

d. Work with the Finance Team to understand budget expenses for each grant and to ensure that funds are spent according to the grant guidelines

5. Coach and support the KIPP Austin Advancement Team

a. Provide management and coaching to team members through weekly meetings and daily interactions

b. Delegate and review work projects of Advancement Team members


KIPP Austin Senior Director of Advancement candidates will have the following:
  • At least five years of fundraising experience, including significant success with major gifts, corporations, foundations and government sources; Capital campaign experience is preferred
  • Experience working with nonprofit and/or educational organizations and holding fiscal responsibilities; proven track record of maintaining fiscal integrity and budget compliance
  • Knowledge of Austin philanthropic community; well-versed in the Austin fundraising landscape
  • Comprehensive experience tracking development in relation to income projections and departmental budgets
  • Comprehensive experience in collaborating with a finance team to ensure long-term sustainability
  • Experience building and managing a high functioning advancement department
  • Strategic and analytical combined with a flexible and entrepreneurial spirit; ability to adapt to the quickly changing needs and priorities of KIPP Austin
  • Proven written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire a wide range of audiences
  • Demonstrated passion for the mission, vision and values of KIPP Austin; comfort and willingness to actively participate in the school community
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access and Outlook
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge fundraiser or other donor software (preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree (required)
