We are seeking a Sr. Drilling Engineer to oversee a six rig program that will drill over 100 Oil and Wet Gas wells in the Eagle Ford Shale through 2012. This position will be responsible for operations optimization, safety leadership, well planning, cost estimates and overall continuous improvement. In addition, this position will be tasked with mentoring and developing more junior staff.
Our ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering, 5-10 years of experience as a Drilling Engineer and a strong focus on continuous improvement, optimization and cost efficiency. And, like all SM Energy employees, an uncompromised focus on safety.
Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering
Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Drilling Engineer
Strong detail orientation and a focus on cost savings and overall optimization
Lean Sigma Background is preferred by not required
Develop and design drilling programs, including casing, drill string/BHA, mud, cement, bit, directional components and prepare and write detailed drilling prognoses.
Verify invoices prior to approval in WellView –to ensure accuracy
Ensure all of costs are in Wellview – such as Permits, Location, Insurance, Title, etc
Perform well review with Drill Site Manager and Drilling Superintendent for process optimization and continuous improvement. This will include the creation and implementation of a optimization or improvement plan following each well
Maintain drilling timelines for each well and analyze time breakdowns for gaps that can be addressed (for example – N/U times are 6 hours better on one rig than the other; what can we put in place to catch the slower ones up?)
Prepare and review well documents that are sent to the field (such as cement estimate, mud program, directional plan, well data sheet, etc) and ensure consistency in the format across all rigs.
Assist Drilling Technician in creating AFE’s for each well and make ensure all AFE’s are approved in advance of spud. Verify that the estimates that are put together reflect current cost scenarios (rig rates, location costs, etc).
Make sure that each rig supervisor is sending you all hazard ID’s every week and input it into the EHS system. Be a visible leader in the field showing our uncompromised commitment to safety.
Drill Site Manager and Drilling Superintendant Support
Monthly visits to the rigs for continuous improvement meetings with directional drillers, mud engineers, etc in order to gain a better understanding of what we are doing well and what we can be doing better.
Interact with Asset Teams and Drilling Team
Effectively communicate with well supervisors on multiple rigs.
Attend weekly meetings in your respective team
