Senior Gage Engineer

Job Summary:
Provides complex metrology and calibration engineering support to customers and laboratory staff. Develops processes and systems in the application of the science of measurement.

Key Responsibilities:
Designs and develops measurement processes, methods, and procedures for calibration of inspection measurement and test equipment and testing of products and components.

Performs complex Measurement Systems Analysis using the principles of traceability and analysis of accuracy and precision requirements.

Employs statistics to analyze calibration and testing processes, interprets results, and suggest solutions to problems.

Provides consultation on complex metrology issues.

Designs and develops specialized measurement and test equipment.

Develops and leads the execution of measurement and test equipment capability studies.

Provides technical training on calibration processes and procedures to technicians and less experienced engineers.

Monitors compliance with laboratory quality system requirements.

Selects and manages specialized software used in the laboratory for calibration and testing off-line measurement data analysis, and control of automated calibrations and testing.

May coach and mentor less experienced engineers.

Skills:
Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing - Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) involves an understanding of dimensioning and tolerancing methods for engineering drawings, as defined in ASME Y14.5M-1994. GD&T relates to dimensioning and tolerancing through the use of actual geometric relationships between part features and to part datums.

Measurement Data Analysis - The ability to assign meaning to raw measured data through the use of tools and techniques that facilitate understanding of experimental results and the general quality of those results.

R&R Studies - Skill covers the working knowledge of the use and design of R&R studies to evaluate a measurement process's capability. Then to subsequently use the results of the study to determine if the measurement system is capable.

Torque tools - Skill covers the handling, usage through calibration of various torque tools including torque wrenches, air impact , DC tools, etc.

Dimensional hand tool - Skill covers the handling, usage, storage and calibration of various dimensional hand tools including, but not limited to: micrometers, dial calipers, feeler gages, go/no-go gages, indicators, etc.

Dimensional lay out - Skill covers the ability to inspect features of a component and compare measurement results to specifications. Generally requires specialized skill level in hand tool and CMMs.

Measurement Uncertainty Analysis - This skill allows the user to analyze, quantify, and document measurement variation using measurement uncertainty methods as defined in the ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurements or GUM.

General Metrology - Metrology, the Science of Measurement, covers the basic understanding of how measurement accuracy and precision impacts our ability to make a conformity assessment or process control decisions, basic understanding of the importance of measurement traceability and the role calibration plays in establishing traceability and the quality systems that support these processes such as ISO 17025 for laboratories and the relevant sections of TS 16949 and ISO 9000.

Temperature Measurement - Skill covers the handling, usage through calibration of various temperature sensors and read outs including, thermocouples, thermostats, RTDs, DMM with temperature readouts, etc. as well as temperature sources e.g. temperature baths.

Responsible for ensuring all gages used within Fuel System Columbus and JV Operations are calibrated to traceable standards according to the recall schedule.

Develop and execute reserve gage and spare gage component strategy to ensure manufacturing lines can achieve OEE targets.

Maintain operational readiness of GageTRAK recall system by developing support relationships with other Cummins users, IT, and Cybermetrics.

Lead and collaborate on capital projects that address the design and procurement of gages used throughout the Fuel Systems business.

Participate in cross functional work teams to ensure that processes and procedures used in quality and gaging are efficient and effective to support OEE targets.

Manage internal and external calibration suppliers to ensure they are properly qualified and lowest cost.

Track and analyze department labor utilization to ensure outside entities are properly cross charged.

Experience and Education:
College, university, or equivalent degree in Physics or Engineering or a related technical or scientific subject required.
