In Nokia's Patenting organization we employ a global team of patent professionals. There is now an opportunity to join the User Interface Patenting team, and if you have experience as a patent professional then we would love to hear from you. The User Interface Patenting team consists of 9 people located at multiple sites around the world. We file approximately 150 patent applications per year, and maintain a portfolio of over 900 patent families. As an IP Specialist or Senior IP Specialist, you will work to strengthen Nokia’s world class patent portfolio and help to increase the value that Nokia can derive from its portfolio through licensing. You will also be expected to work with R&D professionals in the USA and across the world. Working closely with inventors to seek out Nokia’s best UI inventions, you will be responsible for the patenting process from the time when the invention is first identified to when it is granted as a patent, including working with a global network of external patent attorneys to secure protection across the world for the inventions in your assigned portfolio. In parallel with the formal patenting process you will work to identify the relevance of Nokia’s portfolio to third party UI implementations. The role will preferably be based in Sunnyvale, California, although other locations may be considered if the ideal candidate is found at another Nokia site that generates significant UI innovations.
The successful candidate will have experience of working with patents. Preferably he or she will have extensive knowledge of the patent system, and patent agents or patent attorneys are particularly well suited to this role. You should have a real interest in user interface technology and the rapid advances in the mobile phone market in this area of technology. You will have excellent communication skills, and an ability to develop or maintain close and effective working relationships with R&D teams.
You should enjoy working with Patenting team members and inventors from many countries around the world. It may be necessary for you to take part in meetings at inconvenient hours from time to time, due to the diverse time zones in the UI Patenting team, so it would be helpful if your working schedule can accommodate some flexibility!
While you should have a good degree-level qualification in science or engineering, the details of your technical background are not too important for this role. It is more important that you should have an interest in working with R&D engineers to uncover valuable inventions and teach them how to identify their own inventions, and you should have a desire to protect those inventions to help contribute to Nokia’s global success. A background in software technology would be helpful, however, to enable you to assist the Software Patenting team with support for local R&D teams in the software area, in the current absence of a Software IPR expert in Sunnyvale.
